First and finest of the Rockumentary - Mockumentary genre.
One brilliant moment after another.
"This goes to 11."

Jôen

Flames Of Love - 1967 - 7/10
AKA - Jôen // The Affair // 情炎

Moody drama of young woman chastising her widowed mother’s scandalous behaviour.
Her mother led affairs with lower class men, took to drink, and was run over by a truck.
Now the daughter, unhappily married, sees a similar path, darkly beckoning, in comparison with her faithless, businessman husband and meaningless home life.
A slow film, with compositions immaculate and imaginative.
Fascinating to watch her question those around her, and in so doing, question herself.
Her choices are extremely limited, and no matter how open minded men declare themselves, few are.
Arresting sound mix, as well. A perky instrumental balanced with stark silence or musique concrète.

C B G B

C B G B - 2013 - 6/10

Alan Rickman as Hilly Kristal, founder and manager of New York’s CBGB club.
Groups in movie include Television, Blondie, Dead Boys, Ramones.
Cartoon panels used throughout. Mirrors the secondary narrative of PUNK magazine.
Narrative and characters pounce around faster than a Ramones song.
Just keep up, damnit.
Packed with songs and history.
Accurate? No idea
Rickman shines in one of his last head-lining roles.

Noces

Noces - 2016 - 7/10
AKA - A Wedding

Uncomfortable story of relocated Pakistani family living in France.
The 18 year old daughter ponders an abortion. Waffles and procrastinates.
After she makes a decision, the family concludes she needs to marry.
Living in France, she is becoming too Western.
She is given three photos of Pakistani males and told to choose.
Again, she procrastinates, only this time the screws bear down.
You root for her because she has spirit and joie de vivre, but family pressure is agonizing.

Though opening credits state, “Inspired by true events,”
much of the story seemed to evoke Madame Bovary.

Gun Crazy

Gun Crazy - 1949 - 8/10

After a stint in reform school, then a hitch in the Army, the local man returns home.
Bit aimless, only talent he possesses is marksmanship. His love, guns.
Until the Brit cowgirl arrives with the carnival. And man, can she shoot.
Their eyes lock, and from there on they ride the Noir highway into darkness.

There is the belief that a good person can redeem a borderline soul. (I could be an example there.)
By extension, a bad individual can corrupt the wayward one.
In Gun Crazy, the smoldering Peggy Cummins is not pure evil, but she is bad.
She truly loves her man, but she has a big empty inside, as well as a murderous streak.
Guns and sex propel this offbeat Noir, one of the absolute best.

The Woman With The Hungry Eyes

The Woman With The Hungry Eyes - 2006 - 6/10

Overcooked documentary of Theda Bara, the original Vamp.
Hers is old fashioned, out-of-date by the 20s, dell’‘arte acting. Highly melodramatic.
Alas, much of this has the feel of a padded homework assignment.
Modern actors recreate scenarios, and amateurish animation surfaces from time to time.
Out of place, a newsreel crawls across the screen bottom frequently. Strange.
That said, this is perhaps the best documentary we shall ever see on Ms Bara.
Better, this doc has clips from her few, very few, surviving movies, and loads of stills.
The bulk of Bara’s films were destroyed in a 1937 fire at the Fox warehouse.
Much as I am kicking this, this doc is a must for Silent film fans!

Alice In Acidland

Alice In Acidland - 1969 - 5/10

Dreary warning of moral turpitude.
High school graduate Alice goes to pool party with friend.
Poolside, Alice smokes her first cigarette.
Menfolk, ignore her and surround the curvy blonde, who, we discover later, is an outta control sex addict.
Alice and her friend go from tobacco to alcohol to climbing naked into the bathtub, groping and kissing.
Tobacco, booze, what’s next? You got it! Marijuana, swinging nympho sex, moccasins and Indian beads.
Sleazy, black n white sexploitation quickie offers a steady flow of female nudity.
Black n white until Alice hits LSD! Then it’s colour female nudity, often double or triple exposed!

Dull film has a better thought-out soundtrack than it deserves.
Going from cocktail jazz (think pianist Paul Smith) to percussion to hippie lite to porno grindhouse to trippin’ psychedelia.

American Pastoral

American Pastoral - 2016 - 4/10

Overwrought, over-acted, out of date yarn of girl who turns radical in the 60s, then goes underground.
Wait, no, the story is really about the father (Ewan McGregor) who spends his time (life) hunting for his daughter.
He is below amateur in this, by the way, committing mistakes, making terrible judgment errors.
Then again, there is the crumbling of his middle class, white bread marriage (to Jennifer Connelly).
Some of the scenes that might have been provocative in 1975 are laughable today.
Heavy handed downer of Roth’s critique of the social veneer.

Faulks On Fiction

Faulks On Fiction - 2011 - 6/10

Author Sebastian Faulks strolls through memorable character roles in novels.
1) The Hero = Tom Jones - Robinson Crusoe - Sherlock
2) The Lover = Darcy - Heathcliff - Tess - Chatterley
3) The Snob = Emma - Pip - Jeeves - Bond
4) The Villain = Fagin - Fosco - Dracula - Steerpike.
Passages are read aloud. Critics and writers discuss the novel, focusing on the topic character.
For non-reading souls, there are movie and BBC adaptation clips for every example.
Bookworms, yes, worth your time. Non-readers, not essential viewing.

Lion

Lion - 2016 - 7/10

Deep in his twenties, the young man goes in search of himself.
Rather, his past, who he had been before his adoption by an Australian couple.
As a young boy, he wandered from his small village, ending up hundreds of miles away in Calcutta.
There, he is another runaway, one of tens of thousands, existing on the streets, smiling predators on every corner.
Engrossing story, based on real life.
Harrowing for any parent who ever lost sight of their child for a moment, let alone an hour, or twenty years.
