Given that many scholars point to The Epic of Gilgamesh as the the inception of fantastic literature, it's a very reasonable conclusion. The only other outlet for the weird to be expressed seemed to be in religion. (Correct me if I'm wrong.)

Yeah, the themes are all there in mythology. Weird fiction wasn't dreamt up by one pulp writer from Providence.
