Re: Seeking Japanese Weird

Lafcadio Hearn anyone?

My particular favourite in Shadowings is Nightmare-Touch. Takes me back to my own haunted childhood!

A still underrated writer. I think I shall ask someone to obtain this one for me for my birthday.

Re: Seeking Japanese Weird

My own particular copy is the Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co Ltd version from 1907. It has this inscription inside:

Tom from Budsie

The awful Christmas of 1914

Makes one think about Tom and Budsie and whether they made it through any other Christmas?

Re: Seeking Japanese Weird

I skimmed the thread, so I might have missed it - but if not, I'm surprised no one has recommended Kobo Abe yet?

I already recommended this elsewhere, but nothing wrong with a second:

For those who have seen the movie, the comic is much better - though arguably less coherent. The story is essentially a series of vignettes where people become obsessed with, possessed by, and ultimately killed by, spirals. Very strange. The art is also masterful pen and ink work - don't let the fact it's manga discourage you if you're put off by popular manga/anime works.

My own copy of this edition should actually be arriving tomorrow - it probably won't be available in hardcover for long...Japanese comics tend to be rather ephemeral.

"Kwaidan" is one of the strangest movies I have ever seen.

Re: Seeking Japanese Weird

Saw the Asian Horror Encyclopedia by Laurence Bush. It's supposed to be full of typos and flaws (apparently even the author says so in the intro) but useful for loads of leads into your own research. I think he maybe intended it as a springboard for better work by people who have more resources than him.
I think I'll probably get it.
