I feel your pain. I was a bookseller at our local Borders until it went down in flames. It was incredibly disheartening to see how the CEO's decided to take any and all character out of the place and make the employees act like robots.

When I started, half the employees had tattoos and guages in their ears. By the time I was ready to quit (the store shut down before I had the pleasure), there was a ban on visible tattoos and all but the most conservative piercings and hairstyles.

Re: Day Jobs

I do superhuman stuff on the hush hush mush mush, and who, disguised as Clark Kent, mild-mannered reporter for a great metropolitan newspaper, fight a never-ending battle for Truth, Justice, and the American Way!

Or else I dreamed it.

Actually, after a totally misspent youth of aimless "partying" and discipline avoidance I found myself in the grip of anxiety, depression, "alcohol" dependence, and a complete inability to cope. This led to years of menial labor, confusion, and more of the previous UNTIL one day I denied my soul, and decided that whatever the cost I was no longer going to be a complete ####-up. I forced myself to change a few things, went back to school, got a degree, and now work at a state university in a scientific technical capacity, and where I realize that for some of us, not being a ####-up is just the beginning.

Re: Day Jobs

That's nothing. It's the regurgitating ten pounds of heavily chewed-up raw liver a day that really wears me down.

Re: Day Jobs

I used to work as a scanner in an office, but now I'm studying to work on dissecting cadavers for the rest of my life in peace.

"Tell me how you want to die, and I'll tell you who you are. In other words, how do you fill out an empty life? With women, books, or worldly ambitions? No matter what you do, the starting point is boredom, and the end self-destruction. The emblem of our fate: the sky teeming with worms. Baudelaire taught me that life is the ecstasy of worms in the sun, and happiness the dance of worms."

Re: Day Jobs

After my twenties filled with aimless partying and studying, I graduated in comparative literature in 2011. After that, I worked some time in Academic Publishing as an editor, but ended up a high school teacher in Danish (much like most English majors in UK and the States, I guess) in adult education where I have been working since. In my spare time I proofread and edit academic books (currently it's a book of 415 pages on hemorrhoids) as a freelancer and run a small press publishing Central European fiction translated into Danish.

Re: Day Jobs

Misspent youth, now approaching 30 poor and miserable doing IT in a small business.

Ironically I got sober and got into this line of work to find that the various small businesses I worked for were laundering money for or otherwise connected to the world of addiction. It really is the motor of the economy!

Not ending up homeless is priority number one, which is a tall order these days. Now that I am employed relatives are ceaselessly hectoring me to stop being single rather than jobless. Would much rather be dead.
