Bands You've Seen

As far as I can remember I've only seen two bands live in concert: Tears For Fears and Pearl Jam, both at least twenty years ago. Needless to say, I'm not a big concert-goer.

I'm a little overwhelmed seeing this list, having experienced, in person, so much amazing music over the past twenty years. I'm feeling lucky, punk.

ChildofOldLeech, I too live in a fairly nondescript Midwestern town, basically a suburb of Cincinnati, so I've travelled to distant lands for many memorable shows.

I used to work in a Rock concert venue, and been going to shows since the early '70s, so I've seen hundreds of acts from Public Enemy to The Police, Bob Marley to Bob Seger, The Rolling Stones, Elvis Costello, Simon and Garfunkel, The Specials, George Thorogood, Joe Jackson, The English Beat, The Clash, ELO, Pink Floyd, Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith, on and on and on.

I don't have a favorite. My tastes are pretty eclectic when I give them a chance.

I usually see between 50 and 100 shows a year (counting festivals and opening acts). Copenhagen is probably one of the better places for concerts.

Favourites must be some by Current 93 in 2006 and 2008 at Die Volksbühne in Berlin. I've seen them around 10 times, but those were the true standouts.

Coil in Copenhagen in 2003.

Charlemagne Palestine at Festival of Endless Gratitude in Copenhagen in 2014.

Candlemass last year at Metal Magic Festival in Fredericia.

Ed Askew at the Jazzhouse in Copenhagen a few years ago.

Simon Finn w/Joolie Wood and Blood on a Feather at Fanø Free Folk Festival, I think it was in 2014.

16 Horsepower in Copenhagen in 2003 or 2004, last tour for them.

Multiple shows with Danish loner folk-luminaries Aron & the Blackbeacon Orchestra; multiple shows with Danish psychedelic rock band Spids Nøgenhat.

Blood Axis in Copenhagen in 2011.

Several shows with Baby Dee in Copenhagen, especially the first 3 hour long set in 2005, her first show in Copenhagen.

Some of the times I've seen Iron Maiden and Judas Priest have been stellar (others less so).

Probably a lot more when I remember it. There must be several metal shows which I've forgotten to add, but seeing so many shows occasionally make some things a bit of a blur.


Highlights this year has so far been Drew McDowall, Hexvessel, Arnold Dreyblatt & the Orchestra of Excited Strings (the perfect meeting of avantgarde, krautrock and the vibe of James Last).

Next month I'll see William Basinski, Michael Gira, Of the Wand and the Moon, The Skull (ex-Trouble members), Roky Erickson, and BANG!.

And then starts the festival season.

Gira is visiting Copenhagen again? Thanks, I would've missed that if you hadn't mentioned it.

His solo concerts are always great, very intense. I believe I've heard him four or five times. Definitely one of the best artists I've had the pleasure of hearing live.

But Bowie is the greatest artist I've ever heard or seen on a stage. And I've been graced to be among his audience twice - 1996 and 2003.

They played consecutive nights; the second night each time was absolutely stellar. Big band, but especially in 2006 they seemed like a perfect unit with an excellent setlist. Alas, the setlist of the first night (where Cashmore joined Tibet for the encore) is the only one I've got.

Saw them on the same tour in Belgium, second night was brilliant, but Berlin was the true highlight. In spite of my bad conscience of not exactly delivering a brilliant paper for my 5-day exam two days after the last show... Simply two electrifying concerts.

Sets in 2008 were vastly different with Birth Canal Blues being the centrepiece - but that's one of my favourites anyway.

Of the 12 times I've seen them, only two have been disappointing; both at the HMV Forum in 2010, but that more due to a backing sanger who didn't seem to know her role and wasn't really up to par.

Jazzhouse on the 8th of April, the day after Basinski.

I've enjoyed his solo shows a lot. Actually more than Swans, whose later material I find to be hard to get into; feels like it's been done before by others, but I know I'm in the minority here.

I saw Bowie in 2003 as well. Wonderful concerts, though I can't say I've ever had an intense relationship to his work, in spite of me liking a lot of his albums very much. I remember "Slip Away" from Heathen as particularly moving that night.

Hi all,

I've seen quite a lot but three stand out:

Kraftwerk-London 1980 (amazing visuals for the time, perfect sound and they really seemed to enjoy it, grooving around on stage and having fun).

Nurse With Wound- San Francisco 2009. We had only found out about it two days before and sprinted from a family meal to get there just in time. Once again, amazing simple visuals and a slow drift/loop.

Throbbing Gristle - London 2009 (a good year for gigs I notice!). I had seen them before in the very olden days and am wary about seeing bands you liked then 'revived', but I found the first night surprisingly poignant in its delivery and once again the whole group seemed on good form.

I see far less nowadays. Bands like Nick Cave (I saw the Birthday Party way back when- they seemed full of themselves but very dynamic), are just too expensive but there is a good weird music scene here and I see Zoviet France whenever I can. There are always some beautiful moments in them - they once gave the audience a speaker to pass around near the end of one gig, just gently pulsing with sound. It was handled like a chalice. That was a good moment. You just can't get that watching youtube clips...

I stopped going to concerts. Reason being, the proliferation of douche bags watching the concert through their smart phones. Last show I attended (MGMT in 2010) I about smacked a few phones out of people's hands, as they kept holding them up in my line of view. The general public is horribly stupid these days and I can't put up with it.

I've seen Slayer and Tool many, many times-- most during the '90s. I've seen tons of ####ty metal bands from that era and don't care to list them all. Don't really like any of them any more. I can't really even listen to loud music at all now, I've gotten old very quickly.

This is a little embarrassing, but my wife loves Sarah McClachlan so we saw her about 15 years ago. Not my kind of music really, but it was one of the best concerts I've been to. Sound was pristine, the woman sang like an angel, she had an amazing kind of energy about her. Funny how great experiences can come from the most unexpected places.
