Exclamation TLO Hacked
THOMAS LIGOTTI ONLINE was hacked during the early morning hours of July 23rd. Once the breach was identified, the system was intentionally disabled while the file system was cleaned and the database was restored. There may be issues relative to the setup and data which still need to be addressed. Please bring to my attention any errors or anomalies encountered.

The source of the intrusion is not yet known, but the security team of the Host Service Provider is investigating the matter. It is possible that TLO was not a target for any specific reason, and instead within a range of sites attacked. In any event, I am not placing this notice on the front page as a measure to diminish any sense of wicked glee that someone might gain in seeing the site taken down.

Issues I have noticed thus far:
  • Some info boxes from the left column of the home page are either not appearing or are devoid of data.
  • A few recent entries to The Repository are either missing or incorrectly linked.

I just wanted to add my thanks as well. TLO is an excellent website and it's times like this that you realise how much hard work and effort goes into keeping it up and running.

I imagine it must be tough enough administrating a website without having to account for the kind of cretins who seek to hack and vandalise simply for the sake of it.
I'll stop there before I go into full rant mode ;)

Suffice to say that I think you're doing a brilliant job and hopefully those responsible are trapped in an endless series of rooms where each room leads only to another room with a single door in the style of My Work is Not Yet Done!

Is it just me, or is the entire site noticeably faster and more responsive now? Hmm.

I also seem to have lost a few posts. I only noticed this fact as I had hit the magickal mark of 250 posts and become a "Chymist" about a week prior to the hack. Upon restoration, I was back to 249 posts. I am not sensitive at all to my rank and achievements (or lack thereof) on TLO, but wanted to mention it for possible troubleshooting assistance.

The only other anomaly I have seen is under Your Notifications; I have had 1 notification since the site was restored, apparently an unread private message. A trip to my Inbox shows no unread messages, unless I am totally overlooking something.

And I will belatedly add my voice to all of the others praising Dr. B for his dedication to TLO. I had no idea how dependent I had become on hanging around here until it was down...

It is actually possible. The files that were resident could have been leeching from the resources for some time, as I found nasty bits which had been embedded since April of this year, though the move to take over fully was just this past weekend.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention, as I need details to set everything straight. If you notice a particular time period, let me know. Everything was recalculated as well, so if you deleted posts or such it may only be a correction.
