Nightjar Press

Nightjar Press is a new independent publisher specialising – for the time being – in limited edition single short-story chapbooks by individual authors. It is brought to you by the people behind early 1990s British Fantasy Award-winning publisher Egerton Press, responsible for Darklands, Darklands 2 and Joel Lane’s short-story collection The Earth Wire. The publisher is Nicholas Royle, the designer John Oakey. We are not seeking submissions.
The nightjar – aka corpse fowl or goatsucker – is a nocturnal bird with an uncanny, supernatural reputation that flies silently at dusk or dawn as it hunts for food. The nightjar is more often heard than seen, its song a series of ghostly clicks known as a churring. In her poem ‘Goatsucker’, Sylvia Plath wrote that the ‘Devil-bird’ flies ‘on wings of witch cloth’.

Re: Nightjar Press

Thanks, Slawek! Wow. What a great name. I've always been fascinated by psychopompic birds of the Nightjar family, such as whippoorwills.

While camping last year in a secluded wood, one that I can only describe as a liminal borderland of the phantasmal, I had an odd encounter with Nightjars. I was reclined in a hammock I'd strung between two ancient trees and was reading Machen by flashlight. It was just shy of the witching hour when a chorus of whippoorwills sprang up around me, calling out from among the hills, glens, and grottos. It was one of the most eerie and unearthly sounds I've ever heard. Of course I also instantly thought of Derleth's story, "The Whippoorwills in the Hills", written not more than a 20 minute drive from that very spot.

Anyway, it's always great to see a new publisher willing to take a chance with weird tales. Thanks for the heads-up.

Re: Nightjar Press

I see that Nightjar will be publishing a story by RB Russell from Tartarus Press.

Excellent!

Re: Nightjar Press

What is the title of this story Ray?

EDIT: I'm sorry that sounded like I just interested in the Valentine story. What I meant was ''what is the title of your Nightjar chapbook''.
