In another thread, I linked to the story "The Things" by Peter Watts and was gratified to see that a member of this forum liked it.

So this thread is to provide links to good, or even great, short fiction.

I'll start with the story "Traveler's Rest" by David I. Masson. Originally published in New Worlds magazine when it was in New Wave mode, it appears at Lightspeed magazine. Imagine if Borges was asked to write a story for a science fiction magazine; he might have written something like this:

I used to read stories translated from 2chan posts. They're all short, and some are better than others.

My favorite is this one Pandora . To this day I'm still creep out by thinking of it.

I'm generally not into creepypasta anymore, but Michael Whitehouse is one author from that field that I'd like to see more of. He definitely has potential to become solid author of ghostly tale in traditional british vein.

For me, a naturalistic story of horror or suspense, in order to be effective, must have an unpredictable plot. I found the story "Talking in the Dark" by Dennis Etchison effective:

The Etchison story is excellent. I read it long years ago but never forgot it. Right up there with David H. Keller's classic "A Piece of Linoleum." Keller wrote some of the finest horror stories I've ever read--"The Worm," "The Silver Bridle," "The Opium Eater," "The Thing in the Cellar," "The Moon Artist," the grisly "Tiger Cat," and several more--and it's a sad thing he's now totally forgotten while so many inferior writers are feted. But literary excellence isn't a guarantee of anything.


It's ironic that his science fiction stories, which were really ahead of their time, haven't held up well. (That didn't stop me from writing a long tribute to them titled "August Vinter.") He had a reputation as a pioneering SF artist but it's his weird fictions that are utterly brilliant.

I know that I own a copy of KELLER MEMENTO: 25 Years of David H. Keller but I have no record of purchasing it at Amazon or anywhere else, and I have no idea where it is. Makes me want to order it again, but I HATE that.

Trust me, NJ--it's worth reordering. I confess I don't know the contents of that collection. You want the horror tales--see some titles below--not the SF. You will probably have to settle for a mix. Still worth it. You might even enjoy SF like "Revolt of the Pedestrians." I do.
