The Dead Outside (2008)

This indie Scottish production, which came out on DVD this year on February 22nd, is the scariest and bleakest zombie film (after The Night of the Living Dead) I have ever seen. Strangely, no gore should be expected from it. Throughout the 86 min of it's running time we are subjected to psychological terror devoid of the usual bloodbath characteristic for this sub-genre. Filmed at hauntingly bleak and dreary locations of Scottish country side, with a plot involving not only the eponymous "dead outside", but also the dead of the past, it feels almost like a film about ghosts rather than a zombie one. And with its psychological menace it's outstandingly creepy.
Of course, it should be noted that the film was shot in two weeks time on a micro budget, so spectators might find it a bit lacking on the technical side (especially visible during action scenes), while others may have some issues with its rather simple and familiar plot. Nevertheless, I highly recommend it to all TLO-ers.

Re: The Dead Outside (2008)

Just watched the trailer and browsed the website, this looks great. No sign of it in the US yet that I can find, but I will definitely keep my eyes peeled! Tension and dread trump blood and guts any day.

Re: The Dead Outside (2008)

Looks great.

It never ceases to amaze me that some people can make a relatively good movie on a shoestring budget and others spend a fortune on gaudy baloney.

In some ways it reminds me of THE DARK with Maria Bello and Sean Bean. I liked that movie, but it seems that most of the filmgoers didn't care for it.
