Re: Bob Dylan

Your fall should be like the fall of mountains. But I was before mountains. I was in the beginning, and shall be forever. The first and the last. The world come full circle. I am not the wheel. I am the hand that turns the wheel. I am Time, the Destroyer. I was the wind and the stars before this. Before planets. Before heaven and hell. And when all is done, I will be wind again, to blow this world as dust back into endless space. To me the coming and going of Man is as nothing.

Re: Bob Dylan

Many thanks, Miguel! I can see why some would call it a "book report" but, damn it, I really like it.
Three great works of art .
Seriously, if you haven't read all three, your life is somewhat impoverished.

This helps us to see how the language and mythic atmosphere of, especially, Moby Dick influenced his songs.
Yes, I just quoted myself there.

("If you're not talkin' to yourself, you're talkin' to the wrong people." --Cajun proverb)

If you listen to Dylan's Nobel lecture between about 8:40 and 9:35 (and in other places, too), you'll hear what I was trying to describe in that previous post. In the way Dylan chants the bit of plot summary there, I think you can hear how heightened literary language and storied personages and events feed right into his style of songwriting and singing. I think that was the point of those plot summaries. It was not so much a telling as a performing of how some powerful works of literature influenced his sensibility and practices as a singer-songwriter. For those who have ears to hear. At least that is what I think he was doing there. If he wasn't doing that, then I don't know quite what he was doing!

Re: Bob Dylan

Gveranon, I wasn't referring to you when I said some viewed it as a book report, not a speech. I thought your post was right on.
No, I've seen that complaint from a number of journalists who might just be nursing sour grapes.

Druidic, I didn't think you were referring to me. I just took your post, and Miguel's link to the lecture, as an opportunity to expatiate.

When I mentioned what some people thought about Dylan's "book reports" in my earlier post, I was also referring to journalists and comments I saw elsewhere.
