Papers, please

"Paper's please"

Games by Lucas Pope

Quite an Orwellian themed game from first appearances. Certainly an interesting idea for a game, the power of the player resting in a person's documentation rather than a chainsaw or boomstick!
Absolute power corrupts and all that.

The rather bleak graphics lend themselves well to the subject matter too.

It wouldn't surprise me if this ended up being used as a training simulator.

"A Dystopian Document Thriller.

The communist state of Arstotzka has just ended a 6-year war with neighboring Kolechia and reclaimed its rightful half of the border town, Grestin.

Your job as an immigration inspector is to control the flow of people entering the Arstotzkan side of Grestin from Kolechia. Among the throngs of immigrants and visitors looking for work are hidden smugglers, spies, and terrorists. Using only the documents provided by travelers and MoA's primitive computer dispatch system you must decide who can enter Arstotzka and who will be turned away or arrested."

I also like the descriptions of the other games by Lucas Pope. No doubt a Kafka fan. If it hasn't been done already, The Trial, The Castle, and even Amerika and The Metamorphosis are crying out to be made into games.

Re: Papers, please

I bought this game on a GOG sale and complete it recently. It is an interesting game if anyone wants to understand the life of a bureaucrat or how a Himmler comes to be.
In the game, you are an immigration officer in a communist regime with 4 family members to feed. You get pay $5 for each person you process (I have even absorbed the vocabulary!), and you get penalties if you let someone with mismatched documents in. The rent is $25, food $20, and heater $10. To feed your family, you need to check 11 people a day. It sounds easy, but when you have to check and cross-check gender, birthday, district of passport, expiration date, immunization papers, reason for visit, fingerprints...anywhere from 3 to 7 documents per person-the DENIED stamp will be closer to your heart than any plea.

There are also opportunities to join a terrorist organization, to take part in a vengeance against a child serial killer, shoot people trying to cross the fence, and getting bombed/attacked in your post.

"Tell me how you want to die, and I'll tell you who you are. In other words, how do you fill out an empty life? With women, books, or worldly ambitions? No matter what you do, the starting point is boredom, and the end self-destruction. The emblem of our fate: the sky teeming with worms. Baudelaire taught me that life is the ecstasy of worms in the sun, and happiness the dance of worms."

Here's a short film for this game.
