"The Maze of the Enchanter" by Clark Ashton Smith - now shipping

Today is a good day. I came home to find a package on my doorstep: my pre-ordered copy of "The Maze of the Enchanter", volume 4 in Night Shade Books' 5 volume collection of the works of Clark Ashton Smith.

This volume is just as handsome and well-produced as the other three, with CAS himself making a cameo on the cover. And some of my favorite stories are in here: "The White Sybil", "The Isle of the Torturers", and "The Weaver in the Vaults" among others. I pre-ordered this book over a year ago, and it looks to be worth the wait.

I bought "The Red World of Polaris" a while back, and honestly, it was a bit of a disappointment. Those stories do have their thoroughly weird elements, but seem to be examples of Mr. Smith's more financially-motivated pulp work. Good early science-fiction, but not the nightmarish phantasmagoria accessible in some of his other tales.

Anyway... I have read most of volume 1 ("The End of the Story") now, and I am delighted to see Mr. Smith's work presented in such a definitive edition. Until now, I had gotten by with old Ballantine and Panther paperbacks - the Night Shade books are worlds apart, fairly dripping with quality and respect. I will take my time with the remaining volumes, as Mr. Smith is one of my favorite authors.

Yes, today is a good day.

Most of Clark Ashton Smith's poems and stories, and related material such as sculptures, drawings, and translations of his works can be found online, here:

Clark Ashton Smith - The Eldritch Dark

But probably you know that.

I know who you are

I've just looked, and the book is said to be available on Amazon for 23.98.

But I'm feeling too financially inscure, just now, to buy it.

At last! Many thanx, I've just order'd my copy.
