When I finished the book, I googled Moths and Samuel Beckett, and there was one strange hit which vanished into something else when you clicked on it.

Motivated by the posts from Nemonymous, I just ordered _Noctuidae_.

I was impressed with Scott Nicolay's _Ana Kai Tangata_. These are marvelous times for weird fiction.

Nicolay has that Joel Laneish flavor for the truly unpleasant in one's life.

If you don't mind me asking, where did you order Noctuidae from?

I went to the publisher's website yesterday and it was sold out.

*UPDATE* That's weird. I just ordered it from Amazon.

Re: 'Noctuidae' by Scott Nicolay

Noctuidae is a novella about three young adults, named Ron, Pete, and Sue-Min making an impromptu hike through an Arizona canyon into the paths of monsters both human and otherworldly.

That might sound like the plot for B movie. However, its still possible to do something interesting with old tropes. This well written story has at least one unique monster, interesting dialog, and an ending which caught me by surprise.

The story follows the tenets of Nicolay's manifesto Dogme 2011, which can be read here:
November 2011 | Weird Fiction Review...

Perhaps two more tenets can be added.

11. The author's knowledge and experience inform the story. Noctuidae is informed by anthropology and history, and perhaps by Nicolay's life experience.

12. Add some Forteana to the story. In Noctuidae, there are time anomalies. Also, the weird monster in the story is a creature I've haven't come across previously.

And so the weird fiction renaissance continues....

Same applies to much of Nicolay's fiction.

Just finished this. As expected, it is excellent. I could've been another longer piece from Ana Kai Tangata so if you loved that collection, and you should have, this is a must read. I appreciate that female character is a huge improvement from those in Ana Kai Tangata.
