Worst Habits as a Reader?
I have two:
1. A tendency to not read the majority of the work of authors I claim to be influenced by. 2. When I juggle multiple books at a time, occasionally a book goes perpetually half-finished. |

Re: Worst Habits as a Reader?
Buying books I really want to read in print . . . and doing 95% of my reading at night on my kindle.
Leaves a lot of books I'm anxious to get to collecting dust in the study while I churn through a lot of second rate indie anthologies. Good thing I like second rate indie anthologies.

Re: Worst Habits as a Reader?
I had a rule to always finish a book. I broke that rule once and it was downhill from there. I too do that with thing with kindle and then buying the book on print, or vice versa. The worst part, I read the books on my tablet most of the time, not even on my kindle...

"I myself have never seen the Red Tower - no one ever has, and possibly no one ever will. And yet wherever I go people are talking about it. In one way or another they are talking about the nightmarish novelty items or about the mysterious and revolting hyper-organisms, as well as babbling endlessly about the subterranean system of tunnels and the secluded graveyard whose headstones display no names and no dates designating either birth or death"

This exact thing is happening to me as we speak and I really really hate it, but I can't help it.
Your fall should be like the fall of mountains. But I was before mountains. I was in the beginning, and shall be forever. The first and the last. The world come full circle. I am not the wheel. I am the hand that turns the wheel. I am Time, the Destroyer. I was the wind and the stars before this. Before planets. Before heaven and hell. And when all is done, I will be wind again, to blow this world as dust back into endless space. To me the coming and going of Man is as nothing.

Re: Worst Habits as a Reader?
When I read a book I usually start in the middle or some other arbitrary place; I then read a few pages or sometimes more, to get a sense of the atmosphere or the style; And if it captures my attention I then start reading it again from page 1, or else I just put it aside and read something else. Most books I don't finish which I honestly think would be a waste of time. But if the book is very good I usually read it more than once.

Re: Worst Habits as a Reader?
A habit I used to have is to read a book twice in a row because the first time I couldn't remember what it was about. I read Face of Another three times, with complete annotations like an English's assignment. Afterward I found a better system. I would read and write a brief summary with my impressions of the plot, characters, and atmosphere. Now I don't feel the crippling anxiety of being a forgetful reader anymore.
Another habit I now have: I would read a book halfway through, get into a boring part, abandon the book for a month, then dreading picking it up again. I'm reading Death on the Installment Plan through 220 pages, and there are 400 pages left now. Hopefully I will finish it by July.
"Tell me how you want to die, and I'll tell you who you are. In other words, how do you fill out an empty life? With women, books, or worldly ambitions? No matter what you do, the starting point is boredom, and the end self-destruction. The emblem of our fate: the sky teeming with worms. Baudelaire taught me that life is the ecstasy of worms in the sun, and happiness the dance of worms."

Re: Worst Habits as a Reader?
If an introduction is more than a page or two long, it gets skipped. Nothing annoys me more than opening a book and seeing a 10-15 page introduction. I know it shouldn't, because reading some long introductions has proven beneficial, but I always have specific reasons for buying certain books, and would ultimately just like to read the material instead of some guy talking about the books his grandma read to him in his childhood.
I also buy way more books than I can read in a reasonable timeframe. I'm sorta cool with that though, because I'm incredibly superficial and like having a full bookcase.

Re: Worst Habits as a Reader?
I think the vast majority of what gets used for introductions and forewards should be in the back of the book, but I try to keep all that stuff til after I finished the actual book. I think my edition of Frankenstein has 60 pages of material before the story.

I've functioned as a professional book reviewer and if you are not being, as they love to say now, mindful while you are reading you should not read at all.
