I saw that too, and it lines up with what I've been told previously -- Songs and Grimscribe in a single volume. Though, again, I can only say that the details are tentative ones and subject to change. Nothing official yet.
It seems Mr. VanderMeer might be a bit . . . leaky.

Re: Is A Penguin Classics Ligotti Reprint Forthcoming?

This is now up for pre-order at at least the British Amazon site. A tentative publication date is October, though these publication dates should probably be taken with a truckload of salt. Nevertheless, it's a delight to see this happening.

I cannot help but be somewhat sad that material from Teatro Grottesco will not be included in this volume, as I believe this represents Ligotti's best work. (It's NEVER good enough, is it? Here's to being an ungrateful bastard.)

Re: Is A Penguin Classics Ligotti Reprint Forthcoming?

Quote
Two terrifying classics by “the best kept secret in contemporary horror fiction” (The Washington Post)

The recent smash success of HBO’s True Detective has sparked new interest in cult horror favorite Thomas Ligotti, who was cited by the show’s creator, Nic Pizzolatto, as a prime influence. Ligotti’s debut story collection, Songs of a Dead Dreamer, and its follow-up, Grimscribe, marked a major evolution in supernatural horror. Influenced by the strange terrors of Lovecraft and Poe and by the brutal absurdity of Kafka, Ligotti eschews cheap, gory thrills for his own brand of atmospheric horror, which shocks at the deepest, existential, levels.

Ligotti’s stories take on decaying cities and lurid dreamscapes in a style ranging from rich, ornamental prose to cold, clinical detachment. His raw and experimental work lays bare the unimportance of our world and the sickening madness of human consciousness. Like the greatest writers of cosmic horror, Ligotti bends reality until it cracks, opening fissures through which he invites us to gaze on the unsettling darkness of the abyss below.

"Thomas Ligotti is a master of a different order, practically a different species. He probably couldn’t fake it if he tried, and he never tries. He writes like horror incarnate.”

Re: Is A Penguin Classics Ligotti Reprint Forthcoming?

I'm glad for the exposure of Ligotti's work, but making a book a "Penguin's Classic" always sanitizes it somehow.

I recently read and reviewed the Penguin Classics editions of Clark Ashton Smith and Lord Dunsany, and each was an enjoyably retrospective encapsulation of an author tribute. I sense the Ligotti is a straight reprint rather than a careful editorialised selection of his stories for retrospective encapsulation. Sanitise? That sounds like a form of inverted snobbery, but I know what you mean. But one must celebrate this event.

Re: Is A Penguin Classics Ligotti Reprint Forthcoming?

I love that the book is designated simply as a Penguin Classic – no pigeonholing. I’ve always thought Ligotti's work transcends genre and was destined to be considered classic literature. Now I feel vindicated in that belief far sooner than I could’ve predicted.

Yeah, there's no sanitizing of the material in any case -- just Songs and Grimscribe reprinted, presumably in their Subterranean Press incarnations. A paperback being widely available for low cost by such a well known publisher will ensure that Ligotti's readership will grow exponentially. I'm not delusional enough to think it will suddenly be a NY Times bestseller, but I have no doubt that the book will be a solid seller.
