Heinrich von Kleist

I don't know how many people here are familiar with Heinrich von Kleist. For those who aren't, do yourself a great favor and read his short stories. He was a contemporary of Goethe and a major influence on Kafka. Sadly, he wrote very little because he took his own life at the age of 34.

I recommend both "The Beggarwoman of Locarno" and "The Foundling." The latter will definitely stay with you for a long time.

'The Earthquake in Chile' is among the best short stories I've ever read.

That's another great one. I should've also mentioned his "The Betrothal in Santo Domingo." The ending is downright horrifying as well as beautiful.

Re: Heinrich von Kleist

One of my favorite aspects of this forum is discovering new authors. Thank you most kindly for the recommendation Mr. Veech.

You're most welcome! You ought to be able to find his writings online via Project Gutenberg. Also, here's a wonderful essay written by him:

Re: Heinrich von Kleist

Incidentally, I learnt of Kleist because someone sent me this book out of the blue:

I read it immediately and enjoyed it greatly. Recommended.

After I do some hunting for public domain Kleist texts, I may invest in this if I like them enough.

You're welcome. You can find a cheap Penguin copy containing all of his short stories.

Re: Heinrich von Kleist

I was led to Kleist years ago via his influence on Kafka, who remains my favorite author. When reading his stories I was struck by the similarity in dialogue and bizarre situation in his story "The Marquis of O-". But I have only read Kafka and Kleist in English translation, so I don't really know how significant this is. Due to this thread, I dug through my book boxes and found his book. I intend to reread some of his stories. Thanks for reminding me of this excellent author.
