James Pryde; the ''Poe of painting.''
Fellow Scot James Pryde (1866-1941) is chiefly remembered as one of the Beggarstaffs alongside William Nicholson and was highly regarded in his lifetime. He has often been called the ''Edgar Allan Poe of painting'' and whilst there is a gloomy, phantasmal, and romantic melancholy and morbidity that pervades his paintings, I would say that Pryde has a power and vision that is distinctly his own. Here are two excellent articles on him.

I believe in the power of the imagination to remake the world, to release the truth within us, to hold back the night, to transcend death, to charm motorways, to ingratiate ourselves with birds, to enlist the confidences of madmen.

Hell-Ghost, I have not heard of Pryde. It's haunting. Beautiful. I love this. His aesthetic is decades ahead of his time. Thank you for this find. I very much appreciate it.

Re: James Pryde; the ''Poe of painting.''
A lot of his paintings look like formerly wealthy people living in the ruins of their homes or just a generally darkening world.
