"It is perfectly obvious that the whole world is going to Hell. The only possible chance that it might not is that we do not attempt to prevent it from doing so."
--J. Robert Oppenheimer "The optimist thinks this is the best of all possible worlds; the pessimist fears it is true." --James Branch Cabell | |||||||||||
Your fall should be like the fall of mountains. But I was before mountains. I was in the beginning, and shall be forever. The first and the last. The world come full circle. I am not the wheel. I am the hand that turns the wheel. I am Time, the Destroyer. I was the wind and the stars before this. Before planets. Before heaven and hell. And when all is done, I will be wind again, to blow this world as dust back into endless space. To me the coming and going of Man is as nothing.

Re: Pessimistic Passage of the Day...
“Man’s happiness today consists in “having fun.” Having fun lies in the satisfaction of consuming and “taking in” commodities, sights, food, drinks, cigarettes, people, lectures, books, movies—all are consumed, swallowed. The world is one great object for our appetite, a big apple, a big bottle, a big breast; we are the sucklers, the eternally expectant ones, the hopeful ones—and the eternally disappointed ones.”

Re: Pessimistic Passage of the Day...
"Damaged people are dangerous. They know they can survive."
-Josephine Hart I heard this quote from a movie I haven't watched, "Damage". | |||||||||||
"Tell me how you want to die, and I'll tell you who you are. In other words, how do you fill out an empty life? With women, books, or worldly ambitions? No matter what you do, the starting point is boredom, and the end self-destruction. The emblem of our fate: the sky teeming with worms. Baudelaire taught me that life is the ecstasy of worms in the sun, and happiness the dance of worms."
---Tears and Saints, E. M. Cioran

Re: Pessimistic Passage of the Day...
«It is sufficient suffering to vanish never, / trace new silhouettes of loves against that sodden esplanade of fall / count the newly dead who move among the living and cry long / animadversion in our sobs and indrawn breath.»
From 'The Bereft' by Gerrit Lansing. I've been... inspired is not quite the right word... affected by many of the quotes in this thread. Thank you. I'd appreciate it if those quoting would name the text it's from—and the translator if it's a translation. I got into Cioran because of the quotes here, but I've found that the translations often don't 'work' quite like the original (which is a severe problem with Nietzsche, too, among others...). |
