Yes, I read this a few years ago and found it creepy and engaging.

Re: Recent Reading

Revisiting Schopenhauer's (The Philosopher) The Wisdom of Life. So much of contemporary "philosophy" is trash compared to anything written by one of the greatest individuals to have had to tolerate this bargain bin universe.

"In a less scientific age, he would have been a devil-worshipper, a partaker in the abominations of the Black Mass; or would have given himself to the study and practice of sorcery. His was a religious soul that had failed to find good in the scheme of things; and lacking it, was impelled to make of evil itself an object of secret reverence."

~ Clark Ashton Smith, "The Devotee of Evil"

Re: Recent Reading

Right now I'm re-reading Stephen R. Donaldson's sci-fi series The Gap Cycle, which was a series of 5 books that were published in the early-to-mid 1990's. I first read this series way back in the year 2000. My initial plan was to maybe re-read the first 3 books this year and the last 2 next year. Anyway, I started them about a week and a half ago and already I'm halfway through book 3, ha ha.

Just started on Joe Hill's Heart Shaped Box.

"Perhaps one suffers in the tomb. There are corpses that have strange grimaces on their faces when they’re disinterred, as if they remember down there all the filth of this life." - Jean Lorrain, The Soul-Drinker

I find Joe Hill to be a skilled story-teller, but overall not exceptionally distinctive in style. Where he shines—really, really, shines*—is his ability to come up with powerful, haunting images. I loved Heat-Shaped Box. And, basically, I loved it on the strength of just two such images. Enjoy!

*No... not a coy The Shining reference.

Re: Recent Reading

After literally having it on my 'to-read' list for years, I am finally, finally, about to start 'The House on the Borderland' for the very first time.

I've been very slowly working my way through that one for a good few months now.

I'm really not sure why it's taken me this long to get round to 'The House on the Borderland', as I read the complete 'Carnacki - The Ghost Finder' a good three or four years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it.
