There was smack in her veins,
Meth, too. Coke? You bet.
Enough to kill a goddamn horse.
And why not?
It's common knowledge
The things that get you through
May kill you in the end.

We gave her a decent burial;
Back there in the wooded hills,
Beneath a dying sun
And a rotting elm.
A fine sendoff,
And a melancholy goodbye.
But the sky was black and unsettled,
Rain was moving in...
The air was cool and cleansing
And, Damn, it felt like
Miracles could still happen.

So, in the end
I made my way to that sad apartment,
That stinking run-down dump,
And began to search for her stash.
