Frailty

FRAILTY (2002) Directed by Bill Paxton. Starring: Bill Paxton, Matthew McConaughey, and Powers Boothe.

A man who believes he has been visited by an angel of God, is given the task of destroying demons who have taken the shape of human beings. He is guided to three weapons and is provided with a list of these minions from Hell - the 'God's Hand" serial killer is born. To aid him in this divine mission, he enlists the help of his two young sons.

I think this is a excellent movie. It adds an original spin to the tired serial killer genre.

Some may deny the 'truth' of religion, but no one can deny the impact that the irrational has on this world. "God told me to do it." A killer that is convinced that he is doing 'God's work' is truly frightening.

I've seen that movie numerous times and love it. It's definitely one of the more original horror movies to come out in sometime. The plot twist at the end is excellent. The characters were played well. I really liked this movie.

Re: Frailty

I must try to rent in in the future. I love movies with a chilling ending. Bendk, you should do movie reviews. You are good at it indeed!

My story NOWHERE TO GO was published by PS PUBLISHING in a book titled POSTSCRIPTS #14 in England in 2008. Let me know if you've read it. If you'd like to contact me, send me a Private Message.

Re: Frailty

Thanks, Barry. I am a big fan of the movies, and I think it is fun to write them. I have a few more in mind before I return to things Ligottian.

I like this movie as well. After the amazing hype leading up to it -- the positive word of mouth was truly amazing -- I was just the tiniest bit let down by it, for no good reason. But I agree that it's a very solid psychological exploration of religious mania -- or are the demons actually real???!!! -- and that it features some really great acting and directing.

Actually, the one specific thing I can point to that contributed to my faint let-down feeling is the plot twist you allude to, unknown. It lessened the impact of the movie for me for precisely the same reason that so many people have criticized the concrete showing of the demon at the end of director Jacques Tournier's CURSE OF THE DEMON. For those who don't know the story behind that, I'll deliberately leave the matter obscure, knowing that for those who do know the story, I will have already provided perhaps too much of a spoiler for FRAILTY.

Re: Frailty

Been a while since I've seen this film and my memory's a litttle hazy on plot specifics but overall my impression was that this played like a feature length episode of The Twilight Zone. The TZ part of the equation was fine but the feature length made it feel like the story had been stretched a little thin.

But like I say my memory's a little hazy on this one. I'll have to try and watch it again at some point. A reassessment may be in order.
