Re: Movie Recommendations
I just watched Zoo, an anthology with even more meat than Three Extremes.
It consists of 5 short films adapted from Otsuichi stories (he also wrote Goth, a novel turned into film). Katari and Yoko is straightforward as an opener. It's a tale of twins, one twin Katari living in the limelight while the other twin Yoko suffers abuse from everyone. One day Katari returns a lost dog to its owner, a kind woman who would feed, clothe her in beautiful kimono, and they share a dream of traveling the world and never returning here again. It would come true if only Yoko's mother never suspect what's going on... Seven Rooms is the popular one out of the five. It's about a little boy and his sister being kidnapped and imprisoned in a room. They only have white bread, water, and a gutter to live by. Thank to the boy's small body, he can dive into the water to the other ends when he discovers there are 7 rooms and 7 women in each room... So Far While a little boy stays at home, his parents go out and get into a car accident. From that day on, his mom is invisible to his dad and his dad is invisible to his mom. Only he can see both, only he can help them communicate with each other... When the Sun Shines It's a 3D CGI anime about a robot girl awakened by soon-to-die scientist. During the time they live together, the girl finds out the meaning of life and death when a rabbit she loved dies...This is the weakest part where the anthology falls into popular, sentimental views of life and death. Q: Why did the scientist create the girl knowing she will die alone and in despair? A: He believes she will find life beautiful because he sees this life as beautiful. The twist makes his viewpoint even more absurd... Zoo I like this one the most and in my view its atmosphere makes up for its lack of coherence. A young man likes to take polaroid photos of his lover, a capricious and intense woman who doesn't like being photographed. While they kiss, she would bite his lips and use the lipstick blood to mark his shirt, saying "This is our mark". One day the woman insists on going to this abandoned zoo where she recounts getting lost looking at the beautiful stripes of a zebra. He snaps a photo of her in front of the zebra's cage and the woman gets mad enough to crumple the picture. They have a fight and break off at the zoo... The rest is hard to summarize because it's up to the viewer's interpretation.
"Tell me how you want to die, and I'll tell you who you are. In other words, how do you fill out an empty life? With women, books, or worldly ambitions? No matter what you do, the starting point is boredom, and the end self-destruction. The emblem of our fate: the sky teeming with worms. Baudelaire taught me that life is the ecstasy of worms in the sun, and happiness the dance of worms."

Re: Movie Recommendations
I rewatched The Haunting (1963); it reminded me how awful the 1999 remake was.

Your fall should be like the fall of mountains. But I was before mountains. I was in the beginning, and shall be forever. The first and the last. The world come full circle. I am not the wheel. I am the hand that turns the wheel. I am Time, the Destroyer. I was the wind and the stars before this. Before planets. Before heaven and hell. And when all is done, I will be wind again, to blow this world as dust back into endless space. To me the coming and going of Man is as nothing.

Re: Movie Recommendations
The house itself in the remake is amazing. If only they had used it for a better film.

Re: Movie Recommendations
Just finished watching The Eyes of My Mother thank to TLO recommendation from this thread and this shot.
The acting is great though the ending leaves me with a "Huh?" feeling. I will still recommend though.

Re: Movie Recommendations
The Lovecraftian elements in 'The Void' were pretty good in what was otherwise just an ok horror flick. I enjoyed the imagery concerning a dark and infinite abyss, as well as opting to go with a more traditional approach using gruesome physical effects as opposed to going with the all too common CGI. It also helps having the undisputed king of dark ambient music, Lustmord, contributing to the soundtrack. Overall, I recommend.

Re: Movie Recommendations
I would put in another up vote recommendation of The Void.
In addition to the previous favorable comments I also enjoy the rarely seen wise choices by the characters: not being too specific but the sheriff's handling of the shotgun retrieval and the decision of who keeps possession of it & the use of the junkie when exploring dark hallways or stairwell that shouldn't exist, to name a few. Overall a good effort and I was glad to make the effort to find it in theatre just to support the smaller production as much as possible.

Re: Movie Recommendations
I've never been particularly a fan of Tarantino but I saw Hateful Eight recently and its my favourite thing by him. It seems I'm one of the few who feels that way.
The extended version of The Handmaiden was pretty good too. Nice to see a lavish and expensive looking new film at the cinema that's actually beautiful. I saw Catfight last night and it's a funny dystopia that's even closer to our current reality than most screen dystopias.

Re: Movie Recommendations
I'm looking for dark films set in rural areas. I've seen all the obvious big horror ones like Wicker Man or Kill List, so I'd settle for something more akin to Wuthering Heights.

Re: Movie Recommendations
I've mentioned it before on other threads but The Shout is one of my favourite films. I'd don't know if you'd call it strictly rural but it's set in a Devon village by the beaches. Based on a Robert Graves story, has a really atmospheric soundtrack by two Genesis members. I'm sure you'd get something out of it.
