Re: What Makes You Laugh?
Thomas Ligotti's poem "Memento" from "Death Poems" Memento You meant to take care and put your affairs in order. But the unexpected occurred and there wasn't time. Later, the loved ones came and gave away some things, while putting aside some others: keepsakes or valuables. They cried over an old comb that still had some hairs twirling through its teeth. They laughed a little too. Then someone uncovered what you left in the attic. "Oh, dear," they said softly and home to forget you. by Thomas Ligotti I find some of his storied amusing too. My parents: My mother has a wicked sense of humor and my father's sense of humor was much like mine: people often couldn't figure out if he was being funny. The first r rated movie my mother took me to was "Alien". Not long after that we got a vcr and a copy of "Alien". My father was a seasoned soldier by that time. My mother and I, having already seen the movie, were prepared for all the attacks. If you've never seen it and want to: don't read past this. My father nearly jumped out of his chair and let out a girlish scream when the alien came out of the guy's stomach. After his reaction my mother and I were nearly rolling on the floor laughing. Alex

Re: What Makes You Laugh?
Ah the Kids in the Hall, they called it quits just as they were really getting a knack for what they were doing. They never could re-capture old magic during subsequent reunion attempts. Most of their humor at least, bordered on the surreal, much of it was actually somewhat akin to Ligotti's, though not as grim or intense mind you.

Re: What Makes You Laugh?
While the print version of the Onion has become worse, their videos are remarkable.
Besides horror/weird fiction, my other great obsession is comedy. Patton Oswalt was mentioned earlier, and I've been a fan of his for years. His first book comes out in January. Probably the best American sketch show (and arguably America's homegrown Monty Python) is Bob Odenkirk and David Cross' Mr. Show which, while obscure and neglected when it first aired, has rightfully gained cult status after its release on DVD. Not only did it set the gold standard for modern American comedy, Bob and David went on to have a hand in other shows mentioned on this thread, and the cast members of Mr. Show have worked on great comedy projects of their own. But my absolute favorite comedy thing is The Best Show on WFMU with Tom Scharpling. Scharpling was the head writer on the series Monk, but his greatest achievement is his radio show which, as of 10/10/10, has been going for ten years. Over the course of that decade, Tom and his co-conspirator Jon Wurster (aka the drummer from Superchunk, among others) have built an entire fictional town (Newbridge, NJ) from the ground up in a series of comedy sketches. The formula is deceptively simple: Wurster calls up as a character who asks Tom a banal question about something (usually music-related), and, over the course of the next 20-60 minutes, the normality of the seemingly benign caller unravels to reveal a bizarre individual living in an even more bizarre situation. This includes Trent L. Strauss, director of such classics as You're Soaking In Her, The Tool-Belt Killer, and The Hacksawist, who met his tragic end climbing Mt. Everest in an ill-conceived promotional stunt; Hippy Johnny, leader of the Mellow Grove Commune and maker of such fine products as Hippy Johnny's Organic Motor Oil and Hippy Johnny's Hemp Bullets; and Timmy Von Trimble, a two-inch-tall white supremacist created by a Nazi scientist. Nearly all ten years of the show are archived here, except for the shows that feature material collected in the Best Show's "Greatest Hits" compilations. Plus, if you listen to the episode with Jackson Publick and James Urabaniak (of Venture Bros. fame), you'll hear me have such a bumbling fangasm trying to introduce them that I forgot to tell them my name. |

Re: What Makes You Laugh?
A couple of classic skits from the old Candid Camera, one with Buster Keaton and the other with a young Woody Allen. The Keaton one gets funny about 90 seconds in.
