Real life love story. Ligottian in nature? Weird nonetheless
Dr. Carl von Cosel, whose real name was Carl Tanzler, was a German immigrant who in the 1930’s, after separating from his wife and two daughters, found a job as an x-ray technician in a hospital in Florida. There, alleging of being owner of “nine college degrees” and showing bizarre flights of brilliance, he fell in love with a cute Cuban beauty named Elena Hoyos. Elena, however, was dying of tuberculosis, but this didn’t stop the Doc from being obsessed with her and bowing to cure her of the illness by bizarre and unorthodox methods that the hospital’s authorities didn’t have problems accepting, considering his forged professional career.
Elena, however, died soon after at the young age of 22 and the doctor was left alone and shattered. But death was only the beginning and what happened next is just flat out weird in nature... **Contains some slight graphic material and descriptions that are probably tasteless** Good page with info... tons of typos, though. Another informative page. This reminds me of some of Ligotti's twisted men of science... Master Rignolo (was that his name?) comes to mind...

This is a brilliant story. You could convert it into a novel with zero poetic license and it would still be perfect.

I agree with Quentin. That would make an interesting story.

I wonder if Robert Bloch knew about this guy? This story puts me in mind of a few things: House of Wax, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Ed Gein, and Psycho. I can't believe I haven't seen a book on this story in the 'true crime' section at the library. A very creepy story indeed.

What's creepy is that Tanzler actually looks like my German language teacher, who's German as well!
