Re: Beneath the Surface -- a collection by Simon Strantzas

I recently found out that Humdrumming Press, the publisher of Beneath the Surface, has gone out of business. There is an announcement at their website: http://www.humdrumming.co.uk/.

I've been looking forward to reading Beneath the Surface ever since I first read about it here. It is no longer available from the Humdrumming website, since they have closed their shop. It might still be available from Titles Bookstore: http://titles.mcmaster.ca/.

Re: Beneath the Surface -- a collection by Simon Strantzas

I'm currently reading and commenting on each story in this book here;
http://shocklinesforum.yuku.com/repl...ml#reply-82141

As an example this is what I wrote today;

I think I can safely say that THE WOUND SO DEEP is one of the most disturbing stories I've ever read. I felt actually polluted by the protagonist's 'passenger' (a form of Mr Can?). As well as that, it was an excellent portrait of a sensitive office-worker (a man not comfortable with the laddish company of other men) one with paranoiac fear of endangering other people with pollution, then revelling in it, then being subsumed himself. This has definite archetypes within us all, to a greater or lesser degree. Phew! Must let this story rest for a good while before I decide whether it is an all-time horror classic or not, for it is certainly a candidate for so being...
"...a bodiless head floating on the periphery."

Re: Beneath the Surface -- a collection by Simon Strantzas

Hello all. I thought I'd mention here that I just received the remained dozen copies of this book from what remains of Humdrumming, so if you think you may be interested in a copy, I'd urge you to let me know privately. After these copies go, that's it. Sadly.

BTW, many thanks to Des for his thoughtful and time consuming review of the book. It's greatly appreciated when someone takes the time to do such a thing.

Re: Beneath the Surface -- a collection by Simon Strantzas

For those wondering, the books are now officially gone from my coffers. If you missed the boat, the only place with any left is Titles Bookstore Welcome to Titles Bookstore but I'm told their shipping outside of Canada is expensive.

I have other projects in the works that I hope to announce soon though, so all is not lost.

Thank you all again for your interest.

Re: Beneath the Surface -- a collection by Simon Strantzas

I see on Simon's website that Dark Regions Press will be reprinting his excellent collection Beneath the Surface in a fabulous new edition:

http://www.strantzas.com/2010/07/soo...h-surface.html

Congratulations, Simon! For those who weren't fortunate enough to acquire the 2008 Humdrumming edition, Beneath... is one of the finest collections of weird horror to appear in years. Do yourself a favour and buy a copy of this 2.0 version.

Best,
Richard

Fantastic!

Dark Regions is doing great things.

Re: Beneath the Surface -- a collection by Simon Strantzas

Excellent news. I've been looking for a copy of Beneath the Surface ever since I finished Cold to the Touch. They're not easy to come by, and expensive when they do appear.

I figured it might be a few years before this first collection could see the light of day again, but with this happy news, I'm glad to be wrong. I'll be eagerly awaiting the book's release.
