Re: Favorite Haunted House Stories and Novels?

For All Hallows I reread "The Unnameable," a haunted house tale with a very unique ghost. Lovecraft speculates that the ghost of a normal man is a spiritual distortion: so what would the ghost of biological nightmare look like?

Was it Penzoldt who put forth the theory that you could tell believers from non-believers by their literary treatment of ghosts? The former introduce ghosts in human form; the latter favor rotting corpses or worse.
I buy it in general.

Two more from Aickman I'm kicking myself for not including: The Same Dog and Meeting Mr. Millar.

A couple of my favourites -
'The House Next Door', by Anne Rivers Siddons.
'The House on Nazareth Hill', by Ramsey Campbell
Lincoln.

Trying to avoid the usual choices from masters such as M. R. James and Le Fanu, another story I never see mentioned would be The Rope in the Rafters by Oliver Onions. I found it so sad and haunting.

Re: Favorite Haunted House Stories and Novels?

I'm very fond of Stephen King's "Room 1408", which I first "read" in its audiobook format, with Uncle Stevie narrating. He's got a jarringly nasal voice that threw me at first, but ended up working very nicely.

I also enjoyed the film adaptation with John Cusack (weird over-the-top fight a with a refrigerator notwithstanding). It's one of those movies that uses a popular song to powerful and unexpected effect: The Carpenters' "We've Only Just Begun".

Re: Favorite Haunted House Stories and Novels?

I have to echo Burnt Offerings, which is often (and lazily) lumped into the same category as some pretty terrible 70's and 80's horror schlock. It's an impressive piece of weird lit, closer to Aickman or Onions not necessarily in its prose style, but certainly in its subtle introduction of supernatural elements. I wish Marasco had written more.

Maynard's House by Herman Raucher also comes to mind. Again, a book that could easily get buried in the paperback onslaught of the 1980's. And yet it is a daydream tale of possible witchcraft that considers the philosophies of Thoreau and isolation in general. Immediately after I read it I found at least a vague kinship with Sarban.
