Re: Worst Habits as a Reader?

Buying in bulk. I recently bought The Complete Greek Tragedies (4 volumes and all hardcover) since the price was good. Now I have to rearrange my cabinets

"Tell me how you want to die, and I'll tell you who you are. In other words, how do you fill out an empty life? With women, books, or worldly ambitions? No matter what you do, the starting point is boredom, and the end self-destruction. The emblem of our fate: the sky teeming with worms. Baudelaire taught me that life is the ecstasy of worms in the sun, and happiness the dance of worms."

Since it's a multivolume work buying in bulk is probably better than buying it piecemeal. You never know when the other volumes can get scarce!

Re: Worst Habits as a Reader?

Spending any time near my bookshelves, other than just grabbing one book is becoming a bad habit, of late. Whenever I'm browsing what I still have yet to read, I tend to start making small piles of books that are 'definitely next' to be read. Then, the next time I'm back there, the pile gets added to, subtracted from, lastly abandoned, only to begin another fresh pile of 'definitely nexts'.

Watching Netflix.

Put your faith in God; he won't expect you.
Put your faith in death, because it's free.
If you believe in nothing, honey, it believes in you.

That's true. These collections also become highly priced as the years go by.

This habit is the next level of making book lists.

On the topic of purchasing book (again), I have a giant volume of Mathematics: From The Birth of Numbers I haven't touched for 5 years. I bought it on a whim, thinking I will explore this unknown field someday for fun! Since I am not lacking in fun, it remains to be read in the foreseeable future.

Re: Worst Habits as a Reader?

I have a habit lately of reading an author's best work first, so I'm left reading either their sketchy early attempts at tackling the same themes or their later lesser attempts at recapturing former glories.

I'm also guilty of Kindle binge buying before I then exclusively read free works from Gutenberg on my device for the following week whilst living without luxuries because I pointlessly blew my cash.

Reading the end of the story right when I get to the middle part. Sometimes I have questions that need to be answered so I can't help but take that little devastating peek to see if my theories are correct or if I'm in for a really sick twist.

Re: Worst Habits as a Reader?

Falling asleep.

I tend to read at night in bed, and, when I get sleepy, I understand each of the words on their own, but not in the context in which they are used; the meaning of what I am reading gets lost and my brain forgets what I had just read. It is kind of like experiencing the world while being drunk, since you understand what is happening with your body but can't control it.

Your fall should be like the fall of mountains. But I was before mountains. I was in the beginning, and shall be forever. The first and the last. The world come full circle. I am not the wheel. I am the hand that turns the wheel. I am Time, the Destroyer. I was the wind and the stars before this. Before planets. Before heaven and hell. And when all is done, I will be wind again, to blow this world as dust back into endless space. To me the coming and going of Man is as nothing.
