Good Riddance.

Interesting anthology idea... his RED LAUGH is on my reading list.
I read The Red Laugh during my stay at a mental ward, of all places! It is one of the most terrifying things ever written and my favorite of Andreyev's.

This is my life. This is my damnation. This is my only regret--that I ever was born.

I enjoyed reading the plays of August Strindberg during one of my stays at a mental ward.

"In a less scientific age, he would have been a devil-worshipper, a partaker in the abominations of the Black Mass; or would have given himself to the study and practice of sorcery. His was a religious soul that had failed to find good in the scheme of things; and lacking it, was impelled to make of evil itself an object of secret reverence."

Re: Leonid Andreyev: A Tribute Anthology

I was very impressed by Andreyev's short stories. At best he manages to capture a very concentrated feeling of existential panic a la Dostoevsky - I was gratified to find that in an Amazon review someone had chanced on the same comparison that came to my mind: a cross between Dostoevsky and Poe. He - Andreyev - gives a unique mix between the conte cruel/proto-weird story formula and the thematic preoccupations of the great Russian writers (alienation, desperation, will to meaning, vanity of worldly aspirations in the face of death et cetera et cetera).

Has anyone here read his unfinished novel fragment The Diary of Satan?

I read The Man Who Collected Machen while I was high on morphine in hospital after having my testicles operated on due to torsion. To this day I can't read The Tower without crossing my legs.

I first read Andreyev's The Seven Who Were Hanged on a bench in the park, and was visibly moved to tears. Some blokes walked past and started calling me Forrest Gump. I still do not understand the reference.

Re: Leonid Andreyev: A Tribute Anthology

I've never written a story for a tribute anthology. I assume one must capture the aesthetic mood or themes explored by the original author. So, what is the "essence" of Andreyev's work?

"In a less scientific age, he would have been a devil-worshipper, a partaker in the abominations of the Black Mass; or would have given himself to the study and practice of sorcery. His was a religious soul that had failed to find good in the scheme of things; and lacking it, was impelled to make of evil itself an object of secret reverence."
