Re: In search of Stefan Grabinski

Great post!

The history of this sensationalist loving medium-- from stories of railroad insanity to contemporary tales of creepy clowns, exotic diseases, gruesome deaths and exaggerated political upheavals--is a consistent one. Now all the media joins in for the fun; truth, accuracy and decency be damned.

Re: In search of Stefan Grabinski

Il villaggio nero, the first Italian collection by Stefan Grabiński, will be reprinted in the #13 issue of the Urania Horror magazine series, Cerimonie nere, a wide-circulation volume distributed in newsstands in July 2017.
The book will contain the novel La cittŕ vampira (La Ville Vampire) by Paul Féval, the original collection Il villaggio nero by Stefan Grabiński, and the novel La cerimonia (The Croning) by Laird Barron.
Urania is the best selling science fiction magazine in Italy, published since 1952 by Arnoldo Mondadori Editore. This will be probably the last issue in its horror series.

Cover art by Franco Brambilla. A Kindle version will be available on Amazon in the first week of July.

Re: In search of Stefan Grabinski

The Dark Domain blew me away. Those stories are exploding with lust, rage, and derangement. Nothing avoided or sublimated there.

I was curious about film/theatre adaptations of Grabinski's tales, especially of Szamota's Mistress. I found out that a short film was produced in 1927, was well received at the time, but did not survive to our day. Then multiple other shorts. And finally this:

which, admittedly, does not appear to be a faithful adaptation. But I could be wrong, I don't understand Polish.

Re: In search of Stefan Grabinski

Oh, wow.
Do you know the release date for Kochanka Szamoty?
Parts of the trailer remind me of The Woman In Black (2012).
I made a note to hunt periodically for this.

The reference to the disruptive "naked individual" in the closing paragraph of the article reminds me of the eponymous character in "The Sloven" from Grabinski's The Motion Demon.

I am not sure. I cannot find any source that is not in Polish [well, perhaps I could, but it would take more time than I can spare now]. Both director and male lead have relatively respectable credits on imdb, but this film seems more like a small studio production - the studio being owned by the director to boot - a personal project of sorts. Don't even know if that would be distributed/screened widely, even within Poland.

I thought I would email the studio myself. Sadly, only telephone number and physical address are listed on the studio's site. Then again, Krakow must be lovely this time of year...
