NecronomiCon Providence 2013

Some of ye will already know about this convention, scheduled to take place in August of 2013 in Providence, Rhode Island. It has already caused quite a buzz, and many Lovecraftian writers, scholars, editors and artist are planning on attending. The web site link is NecronomiCon Providence - Providences H. P. Lovecraft Convention, but thus far the best place to check up on progress are the two groups related to the convention on Facebook.

The convention will be a celebration of both H. P. Lovecraft and Providence. We are hoping to have the finest Lovecraftian writers there. I am tempted to invite Tom, but I don't want to be a pest and annoy him. Going to a convention may be beyond anything he could endure, but I have no clue if that is the case. If this is something he may in any way enjoy, I'd really love to see him attend. If any of you know him well and think asking him about attending NecronomiCon Providence 2013 is an okay thing to do, please do so. Thank ye.

Re: NecronomiCon Providence 2013

I'm going to guess most folks here are well aware of this event, but I thought it was time for a little update.

The two Facebook pages Wilum mentioned are here and here.

A
through January 9 to raise preliminary funds; it has already met its initial funding goal and its first stretch goal. There are some great premiums, including stuff for those who can't make it to the event but want a piece of it. Also available are some unique opportunities, like a run through Lovecraftian highlights in Providence led by S.T. Joshi, and a poetic picnic in Lovecraft's favorite graveyard with Wilum himself!

The Guests list is truly impressive. A number of these fine folks have posted on TLO, and many others will be familiar to anyone who is an enthusiast of modern weird fiction. Check the list and see how many TLOers you can spot...

Attending NecronomiCon is my primary goal for 2013. I made hotel reservations back in July, and just backed the Kickstarter at a level which includes convention passes. Now all I have to do is convince my wife that this is more important than a cover for our patio. Hrmm.

Sam, ditto to Simon; I got your back on this one too. Patio covers are overrated anyway

I'll be there, along with my wife. I hope to see others from TLO in attendance.

Re: NecronomiCon Providence 2013

I am super-excited about this. One of those attending, Leslie Klinger, is the gent who did that fabulous three-volume hardcover edition of THE NEW ANNOTATED SHERLOCK HOLMES for W. W. Norton; he is now working on THE NEW ANNOTATED H. P. LOVECRAFT for that publisher, and I have a feeling it will be awesome! This really is going to be the greatest gathering of Lovecraftians and Mythos freaks ever!!!

Re: NecronomiCon Providence 2013

I think I'll be attending the convention. Being right next door in Connecticut, it's just an hour drive or so. Lots of excellent and talented folks among the potential attendees, and how bad could a Lovecraft Convention in Providence be? Lots of people I'd like to meet, after all. Sounds like a plan...

Re: NecronomiCon Providence 2013

I was planning on attending this, but have made a decision to attend World Horror Convention in New Orleans instead. (I can, conceivably, do a reasonable drive to New Orleans and have stumbled onto a rooming situation for WHC that's extremely cheap -- the same can't be said for NecronomiCon.)

I'm also looking forward to meeting the staff of my newest publisher, DarkFuse, at WHC.

All this having been said, I might *still* be able to attend NecronomiCon if I stumble onto enough cash by that time of the year. But it's unlikely. This breaks my heart, because I was looking forward to meeting folks like the esteemed Mr. Hopfrog, esq. and Herr Pulver -- but, alas, it's unlikely to happen. The travel budget is slim pickins, this year, at Casa de Cushing.

Re: NecronomiCon Providence 2013

WHC can be a good general purpose convention when the planning committee is right, but I suspect NecronomiCon will be a much more focused and interesting convention.

For business reasons, WHC is a better fit for me, this year. (Fewer expenses plus a chance to be involved in some of the activities DarkFuse is planning for that con, and a chance to meet face-to-face with some of the folks involved with DarkFuse who I've been corresponding with via email, etc.).

As far as programming goes, I'm sure NecronomiCon will have interesting cosmic horror stuff going on, but -- alas -- I'm trying to be practical.

My heart says NecronomiCon but my head says WHC. In this case, the latter prevails.
