Re: Borges: "Most Important 20th Century Writer"?
I'm not qualified to anoint anyone such a title, but I can see how one could make the case for Borges. He's a personal favorite of mine, a literary giant. "The Gospel According To St. Mark" was my introduction to Borges, and still my favorite all-time short story. If I hadn't read Borges, I may never have discovered Ligotti. Thanks for sharing the link druidic.

^Sweet, that was my own first Borges too! It was in that Oxford anthology of gothic stories (damn great collection, that, even with its rock bottom production values).

^ Yes, same collection for me I believe. It included The Yellow Wallpaper as well. That one stood out.

Re: Borges: "Most Important 20th Century Writer"?
"The Gospel According to St. Mark" struck me at the time as having a lot in common with the Dylan Thomas story "The Tree" (which I believe pre-dates the Borges by quite a few years). It's been a while, though, so I can't exactly spell out how or why.
Has anyone else read both stories?

Both works have religious symbolism and both end with a crucifixion. "The Tree" feels more like a de la Mare fantasy while Borges creates a real horror story.

Yeah, I must have read them both around the same time, so the similarities no doubt seemed more significant than they really are.

My favorite Borges stories are "Death and the Compass," "The South" and "The Immortal."

Interesting, I've not read The Tree. I'll try to check it out soon. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
