I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet, but Jonathan Boakes' black-and-white horror adventure game "The Lost Crown" (2008) is simply fantastic. While its primary influences are ghost story authors MR James & EF Benson (rather than Lovecraft or Ligotti), it is a truly eerie gaming experience -- probably the single best adventure game I've played. The story is intricate, clever, and compelling, and the graphics are oustandingly unique: every screen is rendered in rich black-and-white with the exception of a few details, which appear in muted color, as though hand-tinted. Oh, and it's scary.

In my opinion, Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, which a few people have mentioned, is excellent in many respects, but it is also, at times, extremely difficult. Because there's no quick save system (you can only save at various designated checkpoints) you often end up playing the same, absurdly difficult sections 20 or 30 times before you can move on with the story. But the sanity system in the game is quite innovative, and the resulting effects (blurred vision, hallucinations, the pounding of your character's heart) combine to create some truly terrifying moments.

I would also recommend Clive Barker's "Undying" from 2000. It's a first person shooter, but one with a rich story and many scary moments, and a setting that seems inspired by (or at least remarkably close to) "The House on the Borderland:" a massive, ponderous house in Ireland under attack by swarms of small, hideous creatures.

I would agree with that. Though I'd say it's more a cross between The Thing (John Carpenter version), Event Horizon. I'm playing it right now, and I've almost beat it. It's easily one of the best horror/sci-fi games I've ever played. The graphics are astounding. I only have time to play about one game a year (all the way through). Last year it was Bioshock, this year it's Deadspace.

Well I think we can both agree that it's a cross between something awesome and something similarly awesome- and as far as horror/sci-fi I put it up there with Super Metroid.

Bioshock was also excellent
