Ilka Schonbein (b. 1958)
A German puppeteer of Jewish heritage now living in France. After studying and performing for many years, she founded her own theatre, Meschugge (Yiddish for “Fool”). Her work is strongly influenced by the Shoah.

I thought so too. I was unaware of her until recently. I was reading some essays over at Academia.edu and I read the essay "The Grotesque as a paradigm of the Puppet Theatre in the 21st Century. Through an analysis of Ilka Schönbein’s show, The Old Lady and the Beast" by Anaëlle Impe.

I started poking around the net. I couldn't find the piece she referred to, but I did find some videos on Youtube and Vimeo. I uploaded the two short, haunting performances in the OP.

What amazing work, and how fun & unsettling to watch such genuinely strange figures and movements! It remains reassuring that the simplest tools of theatrical illusion - dance, puppetry, makeup, light & shadow - remain so able to conjure the uncanny. Down this rabbit hole I went, and some of her past recorded performances put modern monster-design to shame. Thank you for this find.
