I agree.

I think the two words characterizing decadence are artifice and excess, and they perfectly describe current time. Food, clothes, and drugs are freely available to anyone with a credit card. There is such profusion in the culture that it has to scale back, so now minimalism and fasting are on trend.

The first manifesto interests me since I like to read fragmented writing, and as usual I will probably buy.

"Tell me how you want to die, and I'll tell you who you are. In other words, how do you fill out an empty life? With women, books, or worldly ambitions? No matter what you do, the starting point is boredom, and the end self-destruction. The emblem of our fate: the sky teeming with worms. Baudelaire taught me that life is the ecstasy of worms in the sun, and happiness the dance of worms."

Sanctus Alienus: Purring Missals and Soft Black Stars | rroselavysabbey

This was a piece I did on the real difference between decadence and surrealism, and David Park Barnitz--sometimes I feel that Surrealism was decadence and decadence was Surrealism, somehow.

Western civilization is falling apart because of all the toys that made it surreal, and it just keeps on spending: the little robots being dropped into people's homes and sold as novelty items, all that ####.

Yeah, our entire popular culture worships artifice down to a president who is elected because he speaks artificial truths and has artificial looking skin and hair. It is the natural that is consigned to the ghetto of culture.

Re: Neo-Decadence

Decadence is yet another movement that has been overshadowed by what followed. They pushed the boundaries of their time. Today, I wonder if there are any boundaries left. I would very much like to know what others here think. Is nihilism simply the end of the road that the decadents started?

Re: Neo-Decadence

Artistry and decadence especially end too often in fascism--by that I mean people who embrace the very mode of being, or attitude, that destroys artistic freedom.

And they do it just to do it; or like many fascists, they have rather modest beginnings and want to appear powerful in all things, especially the art they have negated.

The 90's were chock full of movies idolizing ultracapitalism and filled with postmodernism to the point where it got...boring.

It's partly because of the Nietzschean influence (both decadence and Nietzsche share this idea of beauty as an over-mastering value and the artist as transforming the world). Aside from fringe Neo-Folk stuff I don't really see fascist artists having produced anything that decadent in the last 50 years

I don't think it would possible to have decadent white power thankfully. That movement involves way too much fresh air and exercise.

(Suppose you could have this U.S. Survivalist equivalent of des Esseintes constantly proclaiming how he must breed to perpetuate the white race but who in fact spends the entire novel at home elaborating at great length on his collection of Civil War figurines and the mini-battles they fought. I think someone done something similar as a satire on Italian fascism - the protagonist spends the story rhapsodizing about how virile fascist men are but doesn't actually get round to anything sexual)

Re: Neo-Decadence

There are white power decadent type weird fiction writers. And the Neo Folk fascist music is never really that far away from it.

Gabriel D'annunzio?

But he is rare. Most fascist artists are hilarious, and are not all that dangerous. They do exist though.

I am sorry but under no understanding can D R be called a decadent. Pork pie hats, raincoats and football hooliganism are not decadent, neo or otherwise.

Most white supremacists or nationalists seem to focus on military sci-fi for obviues reasons (shooting funny lookin' people!).

d'annunzio could be pretty hilarious too (his major novel features his mistress heroically sacrificing her own wants so the the autobiographical hero can get together with a younger woman + twenty pages of actual balcony speech) though he did write some wonderful poetry and decent enough fiction.

Gottfried Benn would be the other major figure. He was associated with Expressionism but is close enough thematically to count. I believe there were some South American figures who had what might be called proto-fascicist views too.

Benn is a very interesting character who for a while thought that (literary) Expressionism could play a similar role in Nazi Germany as Futurism in Mussolini's Italy. But his (earlier) poems about "The crown of creation: the pig, man", death and venereal diseases didn't go down so well with a large number of Nationalsocialists.

Re: Neo-Decadence

Fascists are weird like that. Ewers was kicked out by the Nazis because he liked the Jews. You'd have thought he would at least have read the memo before signing up.
