Here's a morbid, but morally crucial topic for debate....

Re: Assisted Suicide

I'm in favor of assisted suicide. I feel it is the most basic of rights. For a government to compel you to live is completely absurd. Of course, as long as Christianity is prevalent, those pack of pain worshippers will never allow it. Ask Dr. Kevorkian.

Re: Assisted Suicide

It is true to say that UK people who wish to have the benefit of an assisted suicide need to travel to the Dignitas clinic in Switzerland.

The world itself perhaps needs, for various reasons, now to strive for its own assisted suicide by visiting Switzerland for its going gently into that good night very soon to be generated by the LHC.

I do not mean to belittle this important subject. So you may wish to consider this post as just an aside.

Re: Assisted Suicide

I am in favor of assisted suicide, especially in the case for a few choice individuals that I would be more than delighted to personally accommodate.

Re: Assisted Suicide

I am in favor of assisted suicide. Not just in cases where someone is terminally ill and wants to die, but also in cases where someone is physically healthy, but wants to die.

There are many problems with and reasonable objections to such a stance, but for me it basically comes down to this: no one asked to be born, so no one should be expected to continue living if they wish to die.

No person has given their consent to their own birth. It is literally impossible. How can anyone claim they have a duty to remain living?

It surprises me that people can object to antinatalism, and also object to suicide.

I feel like my sanity might break apart on this point.

Re: Assisted Suicide

I think when someone is determinated to die, he or she will find a way to do it as soon as possible, without help.
Apart from helping people who are terminally ill, I believe that by helping someone to die you take a great risk and responsibility. There are hundreds of people who have suffered severe depression and were suicidal, only to find themselves feeling better a few years later. There are many ways to help a person who is in despair. How can anyone decide on someone else's death, based on his medical record and a suicide letter?

All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream..

Re: Assisted Suicide

I completely and totally mistrust doctors who are willing to help someone else commit suicide. killing yourself causes unmeasurable agony and grief to your surviving family members and friends and it should rightly be a last resort. But someone like the aboved mentioned Jack Kervorkian has been trying since his residency days to come up with a larger source of organs for transplant and cadavers for vivisectioning. As resident he proposed that criminals on death row be sedated and experiment on in school and that their organs be harvested. If the unfortunate criminal undergoing this "treatment" somehow survive then they would be eliminated on the operating table. This is the last person in the world who I would want to help me kill myself. For most people life is a mixture of both good and bad. If life becomes merely a painful existence then I can understand the argument for suicide - but do it yourself. Don't put yourself into the hands of an "expert". Who knows what his or her hidden agenda really is?

Re: Assisted Suicide

Dear Malone, I was only talking about assisted suicide. Psychiatrists are the usual mixture of good, bad and indifferent. They are a lot different from someone who wants you dead. I gave an excellent example of a man who is for some reason considered a saint. By using his own statements I showed a much more complex person who is totally indifferent to other people. Do you want to put the most important decision of your life in the hands of someone like him?
