In my case, yes. I dare say we can also hear from a number of women who have suffered just as badly (worse) at the hands of malicious ex-husbands. I can only say the experience has committed me to a life of monkish celibacy. And quite happily I might add.

That's good to hear. Most of the classical philosophers as well as important religious figures have advocated such a lifestyle.

The heartbreak just isn't worth it. It simply leads to justified bitterness.

"In a less scientific age, he would have been a devil-worshipper, a partaker in the abominations of the Black Mass; or would have given himself to the study and practice of sorcery. His was a religious soul that had failed to find good in the scheme of things; and lacking it, was impelled to make of evil itself an object of secret reverence."

~ Clark Ashton Smith, "The Devotee of Evil"

Re: Rebuilding A Library

How about the art of Beksinski? His works evoke a vague longing for misty, dreaming darkness. Here are some examples from the collection "The Fantastic Art of Beksinski".

"Tell me how you want to die, and I'll tell you who you are. In other words, how do you fill out an empty life? With women, books, or worldly ambitions? No matter what you do, the starting point is boredom, and the end self-destruction. The emblem of our fate: the sky teeming with worms. Baudelaire taught me that life is the ecstasy of worms in the sun, and happiness the dance of worms."

Re: Rebuilding A Library

In my college days, when I was broke, but still wanted books, I frequented the used book store - a dying breed - and hunted for Modern Library editions.

Nowadays, many public libraries have annual book sales, discarding good titles that simply do not turn as well. You can find plenty of surprising titles on the tables. Perhaps none of the esoteric publishers mentioned at TLO, but a rich assortment of history, philosophy, literature, art books, and tons of paperbacks.
Last year, HC were 50¢, PB 10¢.

You might also check out the book "Lovecraft's Library" for lots of interesting suggestions.

That is an excellent idea.

Zaharoff, it's funny you should mention this. Later this month I am travelling to a neighboring county for a huge annual book sale put on by the supporters of their local library. It will have ex library books plus books that have been donated. I have no idea what I'll find, bit I'm excited nonetheless.

Re: Rebuilding A Library

Is Half Price Books near you?
Not that that is an endorsement.
I do not particularly care for that chain.
Also, I tend to think you are in Dixie.
Half Price, like In-N-Out, is not there yet.

You are correct. I live in Florida, not very far from Mr. Ligotti.

Re: Rebuilding A Library

I've read some reviews on Beksinski art books. Apparently, the Morpheus book has the worst quality. Better collections are the Polish one by Wieslaw Banach and the 3 volumes printed by Treville store Japanese Art Books :: editions treville online store :: . The Treville store ships from Japan.
