Forthcoming Books

Radical "Multispecies Feminist" theorist Donna Haraway has a new nonfiction book coming out in September, seems like a provocative title:

"Staying With the Trouble: Making Kin in the Cthulucene"

I have enjoyed some of her past works: "Simians, Cyborgs and Women," and "When Species Meet."

Good material if you enjoy this sort of abstract reflection. Nowadays I'm less interested than I once was, but still am interested to see how she weaves the Cthulhu motif into her new work.

Re: Forthcoming Books

The title "provokes" this pedant to wonder why she misspelled Cthulhu!

Re: Forthcoming Books

I know, in fact I first posted it with the correct, "R'lyehian" spelling without thinking, and then had to edit my post when I realized that it didn't match her title.

Re: Forthcoming Books

Repeater Books has announced a new book by Mark Fischer due out in December 2016 with the intriguing title The Weird and the Eerie.

In the book the modes of the Weird and the Eerie will be examined "with reference to the work of authors such as H. P. Lovecraft, H. G. Wells, M.R. James, Christopher Priest, Joan Lindsay, Nigel Kneale, Daphne Du Maurier, Alan Garner and Margaret Atwood, and films by Stanley Kubrick, Jonathan Glazer and Christoper Nolan."

Re: Forthcoming Books

I have this on the way:

Horror through History: An Encyclopedia of the Stories That Speak to Our Deepest Fears

Edited by Matt Cardin

Publication date: June 2017

Publisher description (slightly shortened):

Quote
This two-volume set offers comprehensive coverage of horror literature that spans its deep history, dominant themes, significant works, and major authors, such as Stephen King, Edgar Allan Poe, and Anne Rice, as well as lesser-known horror writers. . . . Through profiles of major authors, critical analyses of important works, and overview essays focused on horror during particular periods as well as on related issues such as religion, apocalypticism, social criticism, and gender, readers will discover the fascinating early roots and evolution of horror writings as well as the reciprocal influence of horror literature and horror cinema.

In the first section, overview essays on horror during different historical periods situate works of horror literature within the social, cultural, historical, and intellectual currents of their respective eras, creating a seamless narrative of the genre's evolution from ancient times to the present. The second section demonstrates how otherwise unrelated works of horror have influenced each other, how horror subgenres have evolved, and how a broad range of topics within horror -- such as ghosts, vampires, religion, and gender roles -- have been handled across time. The set also provides alphabetically arranged reference entries on authors, works, and specialized topics that enable readers to zero in on information and concepts presented in the other sections.
This project is currently eating up literally all of my "spare" time. (Well, this, plus Vastarien.) It will feature more than 400 entries spread across two volumes. Some of the writers of these entries will probably sound familiar to many of you (e.g., Michael Cisco, Darrell Schweitzer, Stefan Dziemianowicz, S. T. Joshi, Steven Mariconda). I'm really pleased with the contributor lineup.

And yes, of course, there will be entries on Tom and his work, as well as entries on a number of additional authors, works, topics, and themes of central interest around these parts.

RE. "THE WEIRD AND THE EERIE"

Dear Nethescurial,

This work looks most intriguing and thanks for posting the link! I am interested in his proposed distinction between the "Weird" and the "Eerie" (the latter of which I take to mean the "Uncanny"). I will definitely be looking into this one.

Re: Forthcoming Books

Spent last night with S. T. who is in ye middle of proofing the forthcoming volume of ye CAS/HPL correspondence, whut will be around 700 pages. It will be from Hippocampus Press, who will also, sometime this year, give us THE ANNOTATED FUNGI FROM YUGGOTH, a magnificent hardcover volume that will print all of Lovecraft's sonnets, each with a new illustration, facsimile of Lovecraft's entire autograph manuscript, ye prose fragment "The Book," which was Lovecraft's attempt to write out his sonnet sequence in prose form, and pages of commentary by David E. Schultz. I have an early version of ye book in ARC, and it is going to be fabulous.

"We work in the dark -- we do what we can -- we give what we have. Our doubt is our passion and our passion is our task. The rest is the madness of art."
--Henry James (1843-1916)

@matt cardin
This might very well be the greatest landmark in horror scholarship since "Supernatural Horror in Literature".

All aboard the hype train!

Re: Forthcoming Books

Regarding my Horror through History project: I'm pleased to announce (or maybe "pleased" is too soft a word) that Richard Gavin has now come aboard to write two entries.
