Re: Trump

To be perfectly clear, I actually doubt that Trump truly believes in his public stance on global warming. One must realize that he had strong business-related reasons for his climate change denial before, as well as that same attitude chimed well with this sizeable chunk of Republican voting body during his presidential campaign. Man of convictions he is not, he's the sort of slimy opportunist that will assume whatever stance serves him best at any given time. That is not to say that he'll change his position on this particular issue, as it will continue to serve his short term interests.

Neoliberalism has about as much in common with actual liberalism as neoconservatism does, two are borderline interchangeable (especially within US politics). I somehow think that you're perfectly aware of this though, but your equating of neoliberals with liberals is making this discussion easier for you.

For that matter, traditionally, almost all writing was aligned with a political perspective. So I would argue that "writing" and "fiction" are closely aligned with politics. Most of my closest friends I would not talk politics with. Or rather, I am willing to listen to them, but get the strong feeling such would not be the case in reverse. This is why I dislike 'politics'. "Everything is politics" is usually the preliminary to, "If you don't agree with me you are subhuman."

I'd prefer friendship to be larger than that, but, much to my horror, see that ideas of anything that can cross political boundaries are dying out in our current global cultural climate (when, with globalism, you'd think the idea of permeable boundaries would be much more readily accepted).

Re: Trump

I'm okay with a political discussion here as long as it doesn't devolve into name calling and/or boring, redundant arguments.

Even on TLO, it's hard to ignore the political upheaval that much of the world is undergoing. And, for the record, I believe Trump is and will be a disaster, which will lead to some terrible consequences for many if not all of us. I sincerely hope I'm mistaken.

Re: Trump

I come from quote unquote Trump country, the heartland, about an hour and a half south of Detroit. I was a factory laborer for half a decade, I've worked in retail, I've been unemployed, and I'm well versed in all the supposed circumstances that gave rise to the man's election. His supporters are my former co-workers, my extended family, people I interact with regularly. What it generally comes down to for me is this: Just because political correctness has reached some ridiculous crescendo, just because you are sick of politics as usual, just because of any number of systematically entrenched maladies, it's not sane or thoughtful to elect the first brash figure that comes along and talks like your drunk uncle at Christmas. Americans are far too impressed with this notion of "telling it like it is." So much so that this man who "told it like it is" can now walk back all of his campaign promises before even entering the white house...and still earn their admiration. So much so that they will even find themselves siding with ex-KGB before they swallow the "fake news" of the "liberal" media. Folks, it's not even a political statement to say that the far right (or alt-right, or tea party, or a combination thereof) is the most out to lunch of all modern representations of thought. Take a stroll over to Yahoo news and read the comments section of any Trump story if you require even cursory evidence of this. The internet, a ceaseless labyrinth of thought, has not made most smarter; it has pushed them to encampments of their old hostilities. Even right now, a Trump supporter who read this would insist on my liberal partiality. But I have not voted for a Democrat in the last seventeen years. I don't scream fire or embellish much, but I legitimately think we're in a pretty terrible place right now. Moreover, I'm embarrassed at how easily duped we still are.

Re: Trump

I would imagine many of us backed different horses, since this discussion contains a number of people with different ideas on how the world should be governed. The thing is that any half discerning conservative, liberal, socialist, anarchist or fascist should see Trump is not fit for the role of leader of the USA due to his ridiculously inappropriate disposition and his lack of knowledge of what is going on in the world and what the job even entails.

Re: Trump

Here's the thing, James: Trump's father left him several million dollars and Trump, over the years, created a billion dollar empire. You don't accomplish that if you are wildly erratic, foolish, stone dumb or distanced from reality. How many multi-million dollar lottery winners end up in debt in just a few short years? More than one.

In the view of many, myself included, America's path needed a correction. And that's what we got. The woman who was largely responsible for turning Libya into a hellhole was not the one we wanted.
16 years of bad leadership! Bush and his boys embraced bad Intel willingly and the result was more dead than Saddam could have killed in several lifetimes. Under Obama and Clinton (she wanted to turn the sky above Syria into a no-fly zone even when the generals told her that would certainly lead to war with Russia) we moved toward a new cold war with Russia. Trump at least isn't a war monger. I'm sick of carnage.
As far as I'm concerned, we had no choice but to roll the dice.

Well, as you know I have socialist leanings, so I don't think we live in a meritocracy. I could probably endlessly list rich people I think are unintelligent and immoral.

I think wanting a country to be run like a business is a bad idea anyway, but if I did desire that then I wouldn't be championing the man who has filed so many bankruptcies.
