Re: Trump

Borges made one or two comments that could be interrupted as support of Augusto Pinochet. (They cost him the Nobel Prize, so much for objectivity on the part of the judges). Borges' remarks have to be regarded in context: the alternative to Pinochet--the Marxists-- seemed far worse.
Pinochet's hand could be brutal and his boys were murderous to perceived enemies, real or imagined; but during his iron rule came the revival of Chile, what has been known as"The Miracle of Chile." It's too damn complex to go into here.

Never understood the appeal of being fanned by servants. Maybe it's just what those people do when their screwing has been interrupted. Don't fancy being fed grapes either, I'll handle them myself, much easier to eat from your own hands.

Re: Trump

Trump has achieved least in what he talked about most in the campaign about doing and in what he talked about NOT doing the most he has achieved the most.

The new intollerant breed of Leftists grew out of the far left supporters of Stalin in the 30's and 40's as well as the radical student movement of the sixties. True debate is rare anywhere. In my experience, a fair deal of conservatives are more than ready to deflect whatever you have to say that challenges their opinion about politics even if you back it up with facts (and I've spoken politics with conservatives for the most part). They're more than ready to call you a god-hating cuck libtard feminazi socialist treehugger etc. if you assert a liberal or progressive position and my views were never extreme. Liberals can be very set in their ways too, and there is plenty of name-calling towards Trump (as well as plenty of facts as to why he's no good) but its not exclusive to only one "side" like you're trying to make it out to be - its a hard thing to do to change one's viewpoint once you're entrenched in it, no matter what party you subscribe to.

Though, if you want to speak about facts, it honestly seems like conservatives are the least likely to care. Considering the stances on the validity of climate change and environmental issues, as well as on vaccinations that many conservatives tend to have, these things are overwhelmingly backed up facts and scientific consensus. These are things that can not be placed solely upon opinion: is climate change real? Do vaccinations cause autism? There is overwhelming evidence, such that it shouldn't even be an issue but it all bounces off. Where is the rational debate from conservatives about these things that can be so easily proven by facts? There is none because when you take completely anti-science stances, the only way to gain support is to spread misinformation and make people question what is known by the world's experts.

This is kind of a bull#### characterization of the Left that ignores the very destructive tendencies of the American Right, many of which involve limiting and shutting down debate over a number of issues. And from greater places of power and influence.

Re: Trump

I can never figure out if Lefties are big meanies, who bully and talk ####, riot, and hurl insults (and rocks during protests), or if they're sensitive, limp wristed, powder puff snowflakes looking for a stress free safe space who, by their very existence, weaken any society where they are allowed sway.

Another new one, seemingly, is that Lefties are dumbing down society, while elsewhere all I hear about is how over-educated and out-of-touch these "academic elites" truly are.

The mixed signals have me befuddled.

Lefties can't be Dracula if they're also Frankenstein.

OR CAN THEY??

Re: Trump

As Trump himself is incoherent in his nigh constant contradictions, it feels unfair to expect better from people who look at his public speaking and see intelligence and rationality.

I have decided to go on a news blackout for the time being. It's really all just too much. I'm fed up with pretty much every ideology and element of the modern world that has fallen within consumer culture. I feel the fear and adrenaline caused by constant perilous situations in the news becomes addictive, so I'm going cold turkey. Wake me up when the impeachment happens.

It reminds me of the bewilderingly flexible insults the hardcore right has thrown at Obama all these years: "he's a Kenyan Muslim -- but an Atheist -- and an incompetent idiot -- but he's going to take our guns away -- and he's a highly educated snob -- but he wants to destabilize Western civilization by any means -- and he's a complete wuss -- but wants to enact Sharia law here in the states -- and he doesn't have the stomach for the job -- but fake-cried about those kids that got shot to death (if that was even real)."

Get your story together, hardcore right.

Oh, speaking of stories, did you read the transcript of AP's Trump interview? The one that sometimes reads like a Laurel and Hardy routine?

Trump: I don’t watch CNN any more.
AP: You just said you did.
Trump: No. No, I, if I’m passing it, what did I just say (inaudible)?
AP: You just said —
Trump: Where? Where?
AP: Two minutes ago.

and then there's stream of consciousness utter nonsense like...

TRUMP: I’m rebuilding the military. We have great people. We have great things in place. We have tremendous borders. I mention the F-35 because if I can save $725 million — look at that, that’s a massive amount of money. And I’ll save more as we make more planes. If I can save that on a small number of planes — Gen. (Jim) Mattis (the defense secretary) said, “I’ve never seen anything like this,” because he had to sign the ultimate (unintelligible) ... He had to sign the ultimate, you know. He said, “I’ve never seen anything like this before, as long as I’ve been in the military.” You know, that kind of cutting.

If you have a strong stomach, take a look at the whole thing.
