Jeff VanderMeer on Thomas Ligotti

It's more of an introductory article on Thomas Ligotti but kind of interesting to read VanderMeer's feelings on Tom's work:

A True Detective Fan’s Guide to Thomas Ligotti -- Vulture

Re: Jeff VanderMeer on Thomas Ligotti

Unlike Jeff, I didn't feel the identity of the killer was anti-Ligotti.

Can't help but see the murderer as just another swamp dweller and metaphysical mutant.

Maybe a distant relation to the Martense family?

And you can't really blame the writer for all the red herrings. Misdirection is an integral part of the mystery genre.

Regrettable misspellings have cropped up in some of my posts. Unfortunately, I'm not sharp-eyed enough to catch all typing errors so please bear with me until things improve, Thanks.

Re: Jeff VanderMeer on Thomas Ligotti

There's also some minor errata in Frank Dominio's last name. But I've made the same error in the past so who am I to judge. Anyway, good article. The quotes by Cisco and Shapiro are a good capstone to it.

Re: Jeff VanderMeer on Thomas Ligotti

Nicely written article, and an excellent companion piece to Michael Calia's also plagiarism controversy neutral A Brief Guide to Thomas Ligotti and Other Weird Fiction Masters.

I do disagree with VanderMeer in multiple places (like when he calls CATHR "convoluted" or the stories in the Spectral Link "dry"), but "nothing more or less than the king of weird fiction" goes a long way!

"Thomas Ligotti is a master of a different order, practically a different species. He probably couldn’t fake it if he tried, and he never tries. He writes like horror incarnate.”

Re: Jeff VanderMeer on Thomas Ligotti

Another error "The Last Feast of the Harlequins" (!)

And yet another, asserting that this story signaled a shift away from Lovecraftian influence to unique voice (when, in fact, it's one of the earliest T.L. tales we have...and so Lovecraftian that Joshi placed it in his recent collection of great Lovecraftian tales ).

I like Jeff and I'm glad he's getting the word out about Tom. Just wish he'd been a wee bit more careful here.
