Re: MR James: Pioneer of the Modern Ghost Story

The great Fritz Leiber wrote Our Lady of Darkness, in part, as an homage to M.R. James, especially his story "A View From a Hill". James, as well as Leiber, was a master of the errie. He can lull the reader into a false sense of comfort and coziness, then immerse you in the nightmare.James also had a high regard for J.S. LeFanu.

Re: MR James: Pioneer of the Modern Ghost Story

Leiber's Smoke Ghost also utilised the Jamesian technique in a remarkable manner.

Re: MR James: Pioneer of the Modern Ghost Story

BBC4 are having a MR James night on Christmas Eve. MR James: Ghost Writer, The Tractate Middoth, No. 13, The Signalman (yes, it's Dickens not James but I'm not complaining), Christopher Lee's Ghost Stories for Christmas, and A View from a Hill.

Re: MR James: Pioneer of the Modern Ghost Story

"Casting the Runes" is one of my favorites by James. I also love the movie Night of the Demon ( retitled Curse of the Demon in America) that is based on the story. I was going to recommend a cool book that I have: Beating the Devil: The Making of Night of the Demon by Tony Earnshaw, but I just checked the prices on this book and it has skyrocketed since I bought my copy about ten years ago. I only paid around $10, but the cheapest that I can find now is over $100. It is a fun book to read and look through, but I wouldn't pay a hundred dollars for it.

T.E.D. Klein picked "Casting the Runes" as his #1 Most Terrifying Horror Story for an article in The Twilight Zone Magazine.

THE 13 MOST TERRIFYING HORROR STORIES
Selected by T.E.D. Klein

1. Casting the Runes by M.R. James
2. The Novel of the Black Seal by Arthur Machen
3. The Willows by Algernon Blackwood
4. The Dunwich Horror by HPL
5. Bird of Prey by John Collier
6. Who Goes There? by Don A. Stuart (John W. Campbell) Antarctic horror, the genesis of The Thing.
7. They Bite by Anthony Boucher
8. Stay off the Moon! by Raymond F. Jones
9. Ottmar Balleau X 2 by George Bamber
10. First Anniversary by Richard Matheson
11. The Autopsy by Michael Shea
12. The Trick by Ramsey Campbell
13. To Build a Fire by Jack London

This just popped up on YouTube. BBC doc from 2005. Probably worth a crack.

Edit: Our boy Ramsey is in it.

It's a shame that doc didn't inspire the BBC to adapt the work of ghost story writers other than James.

Re: MR James: Pioneer of the Modern Ghost Story

Saw this item on Joshi's blog today, seems like a good deal for anyone interested in this new Machen collection from Centipede:

I also have two spare copies of my edition of Arthur Machen in the Centipede Press Library of Weird Fiction (Arthur Machen Library of Weird Fiction), an enormous 700-page omnibus of his best tales, including the complete contents of The Three Impostors (1895) and Ornaments in Jade (1924), and many other tales. I will be happy to offer my spare copies for $30 each.

I think I saw that BBC documentary when it came out. At the time I had barely heard of MRJames and Blackwood.

Re: MR James: Pioneer of the Modern Ghost Story

Not M. R. James, but also not worth its own thread. I have been tracking down more obscure eerie stories from British television. I thought these two surviving episodes of Dead of Night were both strong and compared well with Ghost Story for Christmas:

I'm now going through the 70s BBC series called Supernatural.
