Re: The Most Formidable Mythos Deity
Naaah... I'd say maybe Cynothoglys, since you can't find a thing about him anywhere, even on Yog-Sothoth.com. Tulzscha's "cult" has its own website, so scratch that one. Mlandoth, a creation of Walter C. DeBill Jr. is hard enough to find. The Feaster of the Stars, summoned by a botched Cthugha invocation is obscure. The Dweller in the Gulf and Vulthoom are confined to Mars, and rather hard to find. Xexanoth perhaps? Mordiggian and Cyaegha are rarities, as are Xiurhn and N'tse-Kaambl... Oh, I'm muddling myself . Perfect. Shub-Niggurath is mysterious. The Dunwich Horror is a lot of fun, too. The perfect brother for scaring the neighborhood bullies. "He doesn't need fists." Heheheh...

Heh...if ya wanna wax Derethian/Lumleyesque/Lin Carteresque,
You could whip out Cthylla, Ythogtha, and Zoth-Ommog. Fthaggua is fairly obscure, also. And Arwassa, Vorvadoss... N'tse-Kmbaal is the Goddess Whose Beauty Hath Shattered Worlds from Myers HOUSE OF THE WYRM, correct? Man, it's been aeons since i read that, and damn was it hard to find. From the Isolate Tower, -Aether[/quote] Yep. Spot on. Vordavoss... Gosh, back to Hyperborea, Knygathin Zhaum in tow! Arwassa... Heard of it. "The Howler" or "The Quiet One on the Hill", right? Yeesh. Fthaggua... Lord of K'tynga, Regent of Cthugha, Ruler of the Fire Vampires, appears as a living ball of electrical energy--where the Sam Hill am I getting this from--created by... Who was it? Ah, and the greater spawn of Kthulhut himself! Y'know, Cthylla was not fleshed out by Carter (coincidence?) or Le Comte, but by a much more obscure later author? No, Zothy's not that obscure. Also, the Usurper is probably the oldest (publication and age-wise) "son", I think originating from Howard, mentioned by the Old Gent in his edits. And to top it off: Did you know Nyarlathotep is "married" to a deity known as Yhoundeh ;)? P.S. What about Mormo? P.P.S. Azathoth and Nethescurial Deity fused, Dagon and Hydra added. P.P.P.S. No one for Yog or Shub? Weird. P.P.P.P.S. I believe DeBill's Mlandoth to be very similar to the Nethescurial Deity and Yidhra to be Nyarlathotep's female counterpart. I'll stop with the notes now ;).

Re: The Most Formidable Mythos Deity
Yhoundeh the Elk Goddess, worshipped by Eibon's persecutors. She is mentioned in CAS's The Door To Saturn, I believe. Possibly others as well.
Lumley used Cthylla quite a bit in his Titus Crowe stories, btw. She was cited as teh youngest of Cthulhu's spawn. Pretty close on Arwassa: it's "The Silent Shouter on the Hill", and he was created by Keith Herber (I think...hey Doc B, am I right?) for teh Chaosium CoC scenario "The Asylum". Think we;ve flung enough eldritch names about, Silent? Treading the Dust, Aether. PS: is your avatar MEANT to look like Ghroth? If not, what a coincidence!

Nope. I'm just fond of it. Thanks for the info. However I do know that Lumley was not the first, and Derleth didn't invent her. Enough, eh? A final toss: Xiurhn.

Well, I don't think I can top that for obscurity, much as I'd like to. I'll have to look out for some of these.

Re: The Most Formidable Mythos Deity
Xiurhn, from Myers again. Great story! Is THE HOUSE OF THE WYRM even in print these days?
BTW, this has been fun. And it really DOES look like Ghroth! Saluting Knowledge Esoteric, -Aether

Re: The Most Formidable Mythos Deity
D'you know I'm writing a short story about Cyaegha? It's entitled "The Noctuary". For those of you interested, the plot follows the relatively ordinary Nathaniel Lawrence, similar to a young Ligotti, who finds the titular object, a library book of a slightly.... bizarre sort. Like in "Sect of the Idiot", I never actually mention the Waiting Dark's name, although he does turn up, and his little-known cult on the East Coast is rather active... Oops, said too much. Anyway, I hope it gets published. I'll first post it on FictionPress to get the copyright. The place does contain some mediocre, gruesome horror, but it also contains a few interesting pieces. "Me, Myself, and I" is slightly predictable but far more satisfying.
P.S. This time around... Ia, Ia, Yog-Sothoth!

Re: The Most Formidable Mythos Deity
I, of course, had to vote for King Azathoth
what was the name of the creature in At The Mountains of Madness that the narrator and his partner ran into? It wasn't a shoggoth was it? Because it sounded a lot more horrible than a shoggoth |
