Ghost Towns around the World/ Images of crumbling symbols of modernity
i've been thinking about starting a thread on urban ruins for some time now after seeing sławeks pictures of this desolate military base in the woods... i'll kick this thread off with images of chernobyl...they were done by a women called elena ( KIDDofSPEED - GHOST TOWN - Chernobyl Pictures - Kidofspeed - Elena ) who documented her trip through the desolate lands of the chernobyl area. It turns out that her story is exaggerated if not entirely fabricated -- apparently she did not daringly forge into forbidden territory alone on a motorcycle as she claims, but went on a guided excursion in a car with her husband -- but however true the frame narrative, the pictures themselves are still (mostly) real (a few of them might be staged), and very evocative. (More info: this thread ( http://www.uer.ca/forum_showthread_a...?threadid=8951 ) explains why it's not true. here ( Chernobyl tour from SAM travel company Ukraine ) is the website for the private tour she went on.)
that's the book on the trip... |
(Dictated while taking a stroll) I have come to realizewhat a superbly contrived marionette man is. Though without strings attached, one can strut, jump, hop and, moreover, utter words, an elaborately made puppet! Who knows? At the Bon season next year, I may be a new dead invited to the Bon festival. What an evanescent world! This truth keeps slipping off our minds.

Russia's Ghost Town in Siberia
One of the Real Russia Project fellows has discovered the existence of a hidden community in the depths of Siberia. His film was aired by English Al Jazeera. Take a look at this extraordinary video. The film is about people who have chosen to live in the kind of place most would be desperate to escape from. The town is called Yeniseysk 15 and used to be a secret Soviet military base, but was closed down by Mikhail Gorbachev when the Soviet Union began to collapse. Now, Yeniseysk 15 is being repopulated... |
