Non-explicitly Lovecraftian films
I have now watched all the films in this Lovecraftian Movies list and I agree that they are in many respects better than intentionally Lovecraftian films, at least the ones I've seen. I very much enjoyed all 5 of the films in the list. Anyone recommend any others?

Re: Non-explicitly Lovecraftian films
The first movie that came to mind when I saw the thread title was In the Mouth of Madness, directed by John Carpenter and starring Sam Neill.
Another Sam Neill vehicle that may fit this description, depending on how you want to interpret what happens, is Event Horizon. |

One of my favorite films is Jacob's Ladder. Not specifically Lovecraftian, but there is a shadowy psychological and spiritual underpinning to it as well as some strikingly scary stuff. A lot of the fear and dread in it seems based on uncertainty, which seems to me rooted in the spirit of Lovecraft. On second thought it might be more resonant with Ligotti's more modernistic stuff.

Re: Non-explicitly Lovecraftian films
I have to agree with "In the Mouth of Madness"...that's always been my favorite non-Lovecraft lovecraftian movie.
As for others...I really liked "The Violent Kind" from the Butcher Brothers. That was some awesome weird horror that was in no way lovecraftian.

Re: Non-explicitly Lovecraftian films
Lovecraftian movies that are not overtly/explicitly Mythos-inspired? I can think of a few not on the list:
Wake Wood - small town with a spooky secret. hints of Wicker Man and Pet Sematary. YellowBrickRoad. Ghost town that drives people mad. Suicide Circle small cult drives many people to suicide. The Shrine small religious group in the middle of nowhere, tourists get the wrong idea about them. Darkness big old house with an spooky history.

For some reason I've always seen "Pi" as a Lovecraftian movie. Maybe that's just me.

I've seen and enjoyed all of those except Darkness (which I am now tracking down). You and I have very similar taste in movies.

Re: Non-explicitly Lovecraftian films
I'm hearing "Cabin in the Woods" is a bit Lovecraftian. Looking forward to it.

I thought the same thing while read the thread. Can't explicitly say why it seems Lovecraftian.

Re: Non-explicitly Lovecraftian films
I agree with the Lovecraftianity of Pi. I think it's because the central character is an eccentric academic studying something very esoteric. The religious group and corporate people out to steal his research/results for their own ends create the sense of sinister cults out there in the corners of society.
