Getting thru the Winter Months

Winter is haunting me. Especially the desolation between the words of Ligotti. When will a new story come to blossom?

Re: Getting thru the Winter Months

There's always "Les Fleurs" (ahem).
Whose story would you want that to be? Your own? I can't say I love the cold, but I do love the dusk onward better than daylight. But I'll take some clouds.

"Think of it [Mr. Veech] -- wood waking up."

Re: Getting thru the Winter Months

Shadow Weaver, I sympathize on more levels than one. I've exhausted my supply of "new" Ligotti material to read. When, when? Winter, though considered "the visible locus of the divine," can be a real challenge to get through. I live in Michigan. I understand completely. I await the day that I may--with impunity--"retire" to a warmer clime. Any day now.

"What does it mean to be alive except to court disaster and suffering at every moment?"

Tibet: Carnivals?
Ligotti: Ceremonies for initiating children into the cult of the sinister.
Tibet: Gas stations?
Ligotti: Nothing to say about gas stations as such, although I've always responded to the smell of gasoline as if it were a kind of perfume.

And now we've got six more weeks of winter ahead of us, according to the predictions of another Phil....

Here in Seattle, we've just been getting obscene amounts of rain (I'm sure some of you heard about the recent "streak.") It's nice to live someplace where a "cold" day is still above freezing, but as someone who loves sunny days, I start feeling really out of sorts when I don't see it for weeks on end. I can deal with the cold; it's the darkness of winter that gets to me.

Re: Getting thru the Winter Months

It's strange, but I pretty much have the opposite experience from you, ventriloquist. I find the grayness and wetness of Seattle this time of year very compelling, not least because it's certainly a "Ligottian" atmosphere. Not to say I don't like the sun when it does appear, but the melancholy days of winter in Seattle have a deep and rich character that appeals to me. One day I will see a shrink who will cure me of that, but I intend to enjoy it in the meantime

Re: Getting thru the Winter Months

I can see why so many cultures are sun-worsippers, but I heartily enjoy the night and the sea. Favorite season: Any. Winter for the cool desolation, spring for the flowers and rain of a revived earth, summer for its hallowed but cruel light, and fall for the most glorious decay.

And, hey, a little sun can't kill you.

"Let it come on in."

"And into his dreams he fell...and forever."
