Bands You've Seen

- While at a show recently, it crossed my mind despite living in a fairly nondescript midwestern city, how many opportunities I've had to see great bands play, and thinking about how on many music lovers there appear to be here at TLO, decided that others might enjoy listing the performances they've been to and what their favorites were. So, I'll get the ball rolling here:

Band of Horses (actually least favorite show ever), The Beets (x3), Big Thief, Bleeding Rainbow, Born Ruffians, Built to Spill, The Buttertones, The Cactus Blossoms, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Shana Cleveland & The Sandcastles, Cotton Jones, The Courtneys, The Cowboys, Crystal Antlers, Dent May, Mac DeMarco, Dingbat Superminx, The Dodos, Eternal Summers, Fergus and Geronimo, Freak Heat Waves, The Fresh and Onlys, Frog Eyes (x4), Gun Outfit, Handsome Furs, Harlem, Heavy Hawaii, The Hives, The Holydrug Couple, The Intelligence, Jaill, Calvin Johnson, La Luz (x2), Love is All (x2), Man Man, JD McPherson, Modest Mouse (with Johnny Marr), Moon Duo, Morning Teleportation, Nobunny, Angel Olsen, Omni (x2) One for the Team, The Pack AD(x2), Pleasures, Jay Reatard (RIP), The Sadies (x2), Secret Cities (x2), Selector Dub Narcotic, Shonen Knife, The Soft Pack, Spoon, Sunset Rubdown (x2), Surfer Blood (x3), Sweet Spirit, The Thermals (x3), Times New Viking, Titus Andronicus, Twerps, Twin Peaks, Twinsmith, Ultimate Painting, UV Race, Viet Cong, Vivian Girls, Wild Wing, Wimps, Wolf Parade, Women, Woods.

Top Ten:
1. Surfer Blood
2. The Thermals
3. Love is All
4. Secret Cities
5. Frog Eyes
6. Modest Mouse
7. The Sadies
8. Built to Spill
9. La Luz
10. Twinsmith/Twerps

Re: Bands You've Seen

I've been to a lot of concerts, and by far my favorite was Bob Dylan in Buenos Aires, March 2008. I expected a low-key show, given his age, and it was a rollercoaster ride; his band is amazing. I've seen Robert Fripp live four times (but not King Crimson, sadly) and each of them was unforgettable.

I am the hand that turns the wheel. I am Time, the Destroyer. I was the wind and the stars before this. Before planets. Before heaven and hell. And when all is done, I will be wind again, to blow this world as dust back into endless space. To me the coming and going of Man is as nothing.

Re: Bands You've Seen

- Sometime in the mid-90's I accompanied my parents when they went to see Johnny Cash play at the county fair; I wish now I could remember more details and had been old enough to appreciate it.

Re: Bands You've Seen

Something like that happened when I went to see The Rolling Stones in 1995 with my parents; I was 10 and I only remember Mick Jagger appearing onstage from an underground elevator and wearing a big top hat. Luckily, I saw them again in 1998 (Bob Dylan was the supporting act and they played Like a Rolling Stone together) and 2005.

Re: Bands You've Seen

- Nice; my brother, who is far more outgoing and not hamstrung by anxiety like myself, by traveling to other cities and even states has seen a number of more shows than me, some of which - Bob Dylan, Pixies, Interpol, Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem, Dan Deacon, etc., I really missed out on.

Re: Bands You've Seen

I've been on a roll this year in terms of metal bands - so far, I've seen Mayhem, Yob, Enslaved, and Electric Wizard. Tonight I'm going to see Liturgy and Sannhet. I've also been lucky to see 1349, Marduk, Goatwhore, and Inquisition.

Some memorable performances include seeing Nico Case (4x) , X (4x), David Sylvian. I saw Echo and the Bunnymen back in the 1990s. I saw an incarnation of King Crimson back in the 1980s. Other memorable performance were by Marc Ribot (2x) and Kelly Joe Phelps (2x). I've also seen several Sacred Steel, such as The Campbell Brothers and Robert Randolph and the Family Band.

Next week I will see Gangstagrass for the third time.

My first concert was a Yes concert, that my mom made my older sister take me to (probably so she (my sister) wouldn't get baked and knocked up - which is what parents know goes on at big shows).

The funny thing is - I hate going to concerts. I hate the crowds and the iPhones. Everyone seems so douchey. I will shut up now.

Re: Bands You've Seen

This was the last gig I went to:

http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/udo/20...-1bcb51a0.html

I was actually trying recently to list to someone all the gigs I've been to. It's not a bewildering number, but over many years it has got to the point where I can't be sure that I remember them all.

Off the top of my head and in an attempt at chronological order:

Accept (supported by Dokken)
Metallica (supported by Anthrax)
Celtic Frost (supported by Kreator and probably someone else)
Slayer (can't remember the support band)
The Cure (many times, perhaps most notably supported by Cranes)
Sinead O'Connor
Morrissey (many times, and with many different support bands, including, once, Beck, who was boring)
Tori Amos (many times, most notably supported by The Divine Comedy)
Pulp
David Bowie (twice, once supported by Morrissey)
Radiohead
Dubstar
The Prodigy
Sheryl Crow
(The last four are sets I particularly remember from Glastonbury; Sheryl Crow was boring.)
Momus (many times - might even be getting into double figures)
The Mathematicians
Thomas Dolby
Leonard Cohen
Blixa Bargeld
Kyary Pamyu Pamyu
Kate Bush
U.D.O.

I can't help thinking I'm missing some, even discounting the support acts*.

The gigs that really stick in my mind as great from beginning to end and deserving the encores they got were:

Accept
The Cure (sometimes)
Pulp
Momus (sometimes)
U.D.O.

There are some pretty close runners up, too.

*For instance, I've just remembered that I saw an intimate set with Darren Hayman among the musicians recently. I can't remember the names of the two other acts at that gig.

Absolutely candid, carefree, but straightforward speech becomes possible for the first time when one speaks of the highest." - Friedrich Schlegel
