Re: Algernon Blackwood on film

Re: Wolves of God, I think a lot of people have read the popular anthologies, but not so many are as familiar with some of the original collections. Makes sense - many haven't been as readily available in book format. Which is a shame because I've come to the realisation that Algernon Blackwood has many strong stories which are never anthologised and sadly little known.

Probably the best single set now is the new Centipede Press one, but it misses so many favourites of mine.

Wolves of God is one I haven't read yet, so can't really comment. I'm trying to put together a collection of original editions of story collections and novels. Some are hard to find at a reasonable price so I've got them in p.o.d - Wolves of God is one of them.

Re: Algernon Blackwood on film

In Waterstones today I found a Wildside Press edition of Wolves Of God. It's quite bare bones and looks like a print on demand book, like a lot of Wildside books.
The whole book is said to be co-written by Wilfred Wilson, who is this? I can't find much on him. But perhaps that's why these stories aren't included in more collections.

Re: Algernon Blackwood on film

According to Mike Ashley's biography of Blackwood (Starlight Man) Wilfrid Wilson (1875-1957) was Blackwood's companion on his canoe trip on the Danube in 1900 which inspired The Willows, but not much seems to be known about him. His first name was apparently Wilfrid, though it's spelt Wilfred on the book. The stories in The Wolves Of God were all written by Blackwood (and credited only to him in their earlier publications in magazines) but some of them owed their origins to Wilson's ideas or experiences they shared.
It's curious that the last story "Vengeance is Mine" is credited only to Blackwood. I wonder why...

Re: Algernon Blackwood on film

I wonder - was Blackwood the only one of the "Golden Age" fantasists to be recorded on film? Of course this was mainly due to his longevity and the career in radio and television that blossomed late in his life. I'm not aware of any film of H. P. Lovecraft, Arthur Machen, M. R. James, Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E. Howard or Lord Dunsany. Machen and Smith were recorded on audio though.
