Even though Swan River Press produces some excellent hc books these days, I think it offered some neat books and chapbooks from the very beginning!

Re: The Swan River Press

Oh yeah, those chapbooks and booklets are time consuming to make, but were really fun to do. I don't think I'll do any more of those though to be honest. There's the off chance that I might do one or two more, but I really get the feeling that format's seen its day! Onward, I say! I'm really pleased with how the hardbacks are looking for sure. Glad to hear your copy arrived, Kev! Best, Brian

Re: The Swan River Press

I should probably take the moment to say that we're already prepping the next SRP volume, which will be Thomas Leland's LONGSWORD: "Longsword, Earl of Salisbury, by eighteenth century Dublin-born clergyman Thomas Leland, is a fast-paced historical romance of medieval menace and high excitement. Set in the early years of the thirteenth century, it features a blend of real and created characters in a mêlée of intrigue, corruption, lust, and revenge. In part a metaphor for the tug-of-war between the sexes, Longsword is the definitive precursor to the Gothic novel; both in trappings and in style, it provides vital elements of prototype for Walpole's The Castle of Otranto and Lewis's The Monk. Through Longsword, Leland emerges as a forerunner of fellow Dublin clergyman Charles Robert Maturin, author of Melmoth the Wanderer. This 250th anniversary edition is edited and introduced by Albert Power." The Swan River Press I've also only got a few copies of Curfew left and they're not likely to last long! Best, Brian

I'm not sure if this has been posted elsewhere, but tucked-away at the bottom of the June SRP mailshot is the announcement that their next publication will be the Selected Stories of Mark Valentine.

Re: The Swan River Press

Tucked away is right! :-) Trying to get the cover sorted out first before I announce it. But the selection is already settled and it's just a matter of time. I'm aiming for October.

In the meantime, we've got some other excellent books coming out!

Best,
Brian

Re: The Swan River Press

Hi Everyone,

Just a few updates on this rainy Dublin summer afternoon! First to welcome our new arrival...

LONGSWORD

Copies arrived this afternoon!

"Longsword, Earl of Salisbury, by eighteenth century Dublin-born clergyman Thomas Leland, is a fast-paced historical romance of medieval menace and high excitement. This 250th anniversary edition is edited and introduced by Albert Power."
I'm going to schedule with Albert to come over as soon as possible, hopefully the end of the week, to get everything signed and inscribed. If you want a copy scribbled on by Albert, please order soon! He'll only be over to do this once...
The Swan River Press
And of course there's an online interview with Albert Power talking with John Kenny about LONGSWORD available here:
The Swan River Press - Interviews

OLD ALBERT
Originally published by Ex Occidente, the Swan River Press edition of Brian J. Brian J Showers's OLD ALBERT will be heading off to print next week!
"The place is Larkhill House, and during its century and a half of existence it has hosted an array of peculiar tenants: the reclusive though brilliant ornithologist Ellis Grimwood; a murderous wine merchant and his young wife; and the Sacred Order of the Mysteries of Thoth, who re-christened Larkhill the “New Temple of Abtiti” and practised there their outlandish and mystical rites. After vacating Larkhill, these individuals—all of them—left something of themselves behind . . . Set in the same haunted neighbourhood as the stories in the award-winning collection The Bleeding Horse, Old Albert continues with the idea that not all is well in the leafy Victorian suburb of Rathmines, Dublin."
Here's a recent interview with Brian conducted by John Kenny:
The Swan River Press - Interviews
Remember, pre-paying orders will be entered in a raffle to win one of ten pages of Adam Golaski's notes for the afterword. How can you afford to miss that opportunity?

SELECTED STORIES
A small footnote in the last newsletter... a little more information now... the next book we'll be doing after Old Albert will be SELECTED STORIES by Mark Valentine, an author whose stories are often difficult to come by at a reasonable price! Jason Zerrillo is hard at work on the cover image, while the boards will feature a photograph by R.B. Russell. I hope to start taking pre-orders and announce the contents as soon as we have the cover ready to go!

Re: The Swan River Press

Hi all! Hot on the heels of yesterday's newsletter, I've got some more
good news!

THE OLD KNOWLEDGE & OTHER STRANGE TALES--SECOND PRINTING

I'm happy to announce that I'm now taking pre-orders for the second
printing of Rosalie Parker's highly praised, debut collection THE OLD
KNOWLEDGE & OTHER STRANGE TALES.

http://www.brianjshowers.com/swanriverpress.html

Here's what PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY had to say abut the collection:

'The eight stories in this beguiling first collection are full of
apprehension and mysteries whose solutions often dangle just out of
reach of the characters. In "The Rain," a single woman's holiday visit
to a small town turns nightmarish when the locals turn on her for some
obscure violation of their customs. "Chanctonbury Ring" tells of an
archeologist who encounters at the site of two ancient Roman temples a
teenage girl and baby who, as the narrator comes to realize, belong to
an earlier time. The title story, which also features an archeological
excavation, is narrated by a woman who clearly knows more about the
ruins that remain unearthed at a local burying ground than she lets on
to either the interloping archeologists or to the reader. Although
some of the stories end so ambiguous as to be anticlimactic, Parker
shows considerable skill at creating dramatic tension and moods of
menace that will appeal to fans of subtly told tales of the macabre.'

You can read more reviews here:
http://www.brianjshowers.com/reviews_oldknowledge.html

And, as always, we've got an interview with Rosalie about THE OLD
KNOWLEDGE conducted by John Kenny:
http://www.brianjshowers.com/intervi...knowledge.html

The reprint will look almost indistinguishable from the first
printing, though we've taken the opportunity to touch up some of the
rougher edges of what was our debut venture as a hardback publisher.
In addition to updating the typesetting to conform with current SRP
formatting, we're including head/tailband typical now of all current
SRP titles. The contents, however, will remain the same: the stories
are just as good, so if you've not yet read them, now's your chance!

Best,
Brian
