Re: TLO Slow?

For additional testing purposes, I have reverted the fixed background images within Death Poems. Other than the scrolling issue in FireFox, I am not clear on how many members are experiencing a decrease in site speed. I cannot find a problem with the server or data throughput. I also use Opera as an alternative browser and it seems to handle TLO with ease. For those of you experiencing a speed issue, it would be a great help if you could install Opera, take it for test drive and report back on your experience. Opera is available as a free download, installs quickly and requires minimal resources:
Opera browser: Home page

Do give it a lengthy test before reporting back. The first access to each area will likely be slower than normal in order to cache the page. It also appears that Opera has adopted the same "security" measure as IE in that Flash objects must be clicked twice before executing. I personally find this annoying, but I suppose one could get used to this easily.

Re: TLO Slow?

I've had problems with other sites being slow, but not here. I find this site amazingly fast, Dr. Bantham.

My story NOWHERE TO GO was published by PS PUBLISHING in a book titled POSTSCRIPTS #14 in England in 2008. Let me know if you've read it. I self-published eight short stories on audio-cassette in 1999 titled, fittingly, BARRY WOOD'S SHORT STORIES. And a few other short stories in little obscure publications -- which I forget their titles.

Re: TLO Slow?

As I already said, I use Opera (9.27, an earlier version that works perfectly for me), and I don't experience any problems with TLO. So I second your recommendation, Dr B.

Re: TLO Slow?

Internet Explorer seems to be agonizingly slow on the main forum page:
THE NIGHTMARE NETWORK - Powered by vBulletin

All other pages seem to load normally, including forum section and thread pages. I am not certain what may be causing this, but for me the page seems to freeze for a few seconds before any control is possible. Can IE users confirm that this condition is consistent with their experience?

Yes, but it is better than it used to be. As I said before, it used to crash my computer, so I do not usually visit that page now.

I believe I have isolated the issue with the Internet Explorer page freeze on forum home, which appears to be related to a script which accommodated PNG transparency for earlier versions of Internet Explorer. I have disabled this script and the freeze appears to have been eliminated. The drawback is that some graphics may look crude with earlier versions of Internet Explorer. If you are using Internet Explorer, please report back with any relevant observations.

Re: TLO Slow?

I fired up Fusion on my Mac, and checked it out using Internet Explorer 8 under Windows XP. Everything seem fine - speed is normal, and graphics look as they should. I know this is not an earlier version of IE, but reporting the data anyway... Can't hurt, except for maybe the time it took you to read this.

Lately I have been using Opera under Mac OS X to view TLO, and it does seem faster than IE under Win XP. No surprise there... I usually use Firefox when browsing under XP. Firefox is almost always noticeably faster than IE on any site I visit.

Re: TLO Slow?

It seems to work OK for me. I think that the Internet explorer is Google Chrome. (I'm not certain of that, I wouldn't really know an Internet Explorer from a number 158 bus, if they ran over my foot as I was crossing the road.) I have the site displaying as Autumnal, because this seems to me the most easily legible and least fancy of the alternatives.

I was actually referring to Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 8 as the browser platform exhibiting the speed issue. The PNG transparency issue is related to MSIE releases prior to Version 7. As for the #158 bus, get a ticket for the attached ride to put yourself in the holiday mood.
