Re: Aickman's Philosophy

Scott Nicolay, aka "Imma gonna pay me """homages""" at Lovecraft's grave" guy, was mentioned in this thread, but I don't exactly follow him and I have no idea what exactly he said.

I agree with James. Hidden X and his alt accounts are becoming a bit of a bore.

Where is this happening and who is doing it?
See my exasperated attempts at setting the record straight earlier in this thread before Ray Russell turned up, for starters.

As to why it is happening, it is because narcissism dictates that certain people feel personal 'victories' in being represented in the weird fiction canon. In reality most (practically all) of the weird fiction writers we consider classic were conservatives. The people saying Aickman wasn't ultra conservative aren't fans of Aickman. They're anti-intellectual fans of looking hip who have read little if any of his work. Anybody who has read my political posts and more than five minutes of Aickman knows the absurdity of calling me a conservative and saying Robert Aickman wasn't.

Re: Aickman's Philosophy

But are there really that many people doing this with Aickman?

Re: Aickman's Philosophy

I don't get how somebody could read the beginning pages of this thread and ask that. It's enough to be annoying given the limited discussion of Aickman available online.

Re: Aickman's Philosophy

I agree with all the things you said about Aickman but If Hidden X and Durandal are really the same person*, then it's just him or her and Mark Valentine as evidence here. I wouldn't consider that to indicate much of a larger trend by itself.

You were comparing it to the scourge of the white dads, which is also incredibly vague to me but at least seemed to suggest things that lots of writers were supposedly doing. I know it's frowned upon to name names but a lot of this sort of talk is begging for some more clarity and examples.

* and Hidden X should know you're not a conservative by now.

Hey!
Sorry to hijack the thread.
Does TLO permit multiple identities?
Very few sites allow that.
Usually MODs can check IPs in such cases.

My very own experiences with, for the lack of a better word, supernatural, haven't in any way shut the rational aspects of my thinking, nor turned me into a religious fundie. If any, they have allowed a more sophisticate appreciation of Nature to bloom.

There's both rational and irrational knowledge to be gained on this life, and in others too, perhaps, and a healthy doze of skepticism can, and perhaps should, go hand in hand with the very real possibility that we just don't know, and will never know, everything. Both worldviews can coexist with no problem. Just look at scientists of the caliber of Newton. Or look at Rupert Shaldrake for a modern example. You'd be surprised at the amount of scientists, supposedly these hyper rational people, who, in fact, believe in the supernatural. All you have to do is break the ice with a few drinks.

Really?
For one, if that was true, I wouldn't be posting here now. Moderators have acted pretty fast in such cases in the past (see WithStrenghtIBurn's legion of speedily banned alts), so my humble self certainly wouldn't be tolerated.

Mark Valentine and Douglas Anderson are just reporting what they've found in man's manuscript. Now, perhaps something Aickman has written in his 20s and never had published indeed should not be viewed as being absolutely representative of his guiding philosophy, but I cannot imagine that either Valentine or Anderson would deliberately misrepresent or abuse it, or that they would put it in spotlight if it was of no relevance to Aickman's fiction.
